About the Optional Essay [#permalink] New post 10 Jul 2013, 22:50
I am wondering if this is an appropriate reason to write an optional essay. I heard that most people use this essay to explain grades/gaps.

I majored in chemistry in undergrad and now I work in consulting. The reason i switched over was that during an internship in operations at a pharmaceutical company, I became interested in business and when I got back to school, I started taking Econ/business classes and eventually got a chem/econ double major. I hope this essay helps to explain how I got here.

In a lot of essays for the schools I'm applying to, I don't really get a chance to tell this story. Should I include this in the optional essay?

It sounds like a good story and you should tell it. However, if the school says the optional essay is only for "special circumstances", you need to explain why are you telling this story and how important it is for you and your candidacy. You don't want it to look like you're just writing another essay.

Hey there,

Generally, it probably isn't necessary to mention it in the optional essay. You can probably tie that into another essay in a subtle way. For example, it could serve as the setting for your "Why MBA" component.

As montana29 mentioned, if it is reserved for special circumstances, then you're better off not mentioning it (it would be difficult to put forward a compelling reason why that's special). Overall, it serves as a good "setting" so try to use it organically elsewhere.
