A for me.

Goals are compared and "as" looses the connectivity.

I agree that B C D can be eliminated. But how do you pick from A and E?

According to OG that can refer to gerund (noun)
owning and living or goal

(E) is most parallel because

as separates two compared entities

owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land (noun phrase)

+ is (verb) + (subject)

as (this is the seperator )

it (refers to above mentioned noun phrase)
+ was (verb) + (subject)

This is my interpretation of OGs explanation.
Here the presence of the verb was is the key

I prefer
"I did like my father did"
to
"I did as my father did"

These sentences are not same as the sentence in the problem posted.

I did like my father did - is correct comparision

I did as my father did - it may mean you were doing something as(while) your father was doing something. It is ambiguous usage.

I suggest you pay attention to what OG says. OG is always right. Understanding OG explanation will help you solve complex problems. I am telling from my experience. Quantity of questions wont get you far but quality of questions and understanding why each answer is wrong will.

But "it" can also refer to gerund too?

The structure of the setnece is as follows

(Noun/Noun Phrase A ) + (verb A ) + ( subject A)
+ as +
(Noun/Noun Phrase B) + (verb B ) + ( subject B)

Noun/Noun Phrase A ---> owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land

verb A ---> is

Noun/Noun Phrase B ---> it

verb B ---> was

I hope it is clear now.

OK, thanks. I understand the point of parallelism. But can you tell us more about the different referent of "that" and "it"?
that ~ gerund, noun
it ~ gerund, noun ?

I know "it" can refer to "noun", but how about "gerund"?

Just some basic stuff.

I believe it can refer to gerund.
For example:

Dreaming is a discovered to be a state of mind, however it was not discovered as a state of mind until recently.

Gerund -> Dreaming
it -> pronoun

The difference between it and that is that it is always a pronoun and should have an antecedent. Whereas that can be an adjective or pronoun.

A ball which is on that table
- Here that qualifies as an adjective modifying noun table
