36. According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.
(A) like that of earlier generations
(E) as it was of earlier generations

E is best. the test is "like" vs "as" and as is approperiate here because the comparision is between the acts or actions: owning and living....

A, and C are out. Among B, D and E, B and D both are not clear and therefore are wrong. "that" and "for" in B, both, are inapproperiate. D has also wrong comparision.

In E, "it" clearly refers to owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land. Therefore E is good.

Changed my mind now with another great HIMILAYA explanation. I'm going for E.

According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.
(A) like that of earlier generations

(B) as that for earlier generations
- awkward

(C) just as earlier generations did
- 'did' is wrong

(D) as have earlier generations
- awkward

(E) as it was of earlier generations
- wrong

A is the best answer. 'like' is correct as it compare similarities in mindsets.

A is wrong. It should be E.

Here is the structure of E.

x is a goal of y as it was of z.

Usage of LIKE is wrong and ungrammatical. We are comparing the goals of old gerenations with that of newer. only AS structure will fit here.

one more vote for E.

the 'it' in E refers to a specific noun , the goal where as that in A refers to a situation rather than any definite noun.

not sure if my logic is right

I will go with A since we are comparing goals here, and the use of 'like' is perfectly fine here its idiomatic.

i was doing this question the other day....

it has to be E. we use like to compare nouns, objects... we use as to compare actions, verbs, or statements....

we use like to compare similar things, we use as to compare exact things...

here we are comparing goals, which is not a object, or noun....so we have to use as...second I think this key...what we are trying to say here is that the goals of this generations are exactly the same as previous generations....so we have to use as for this reason as well...

I give you couple of examples:
Ex: I like to play games like basketball, baseball....

here the above example suggest I like to play games similar to basketball, but not basketball itself...

Ex: I like to play games such as basketball, baseball...

here the above implies I like to play basketball, baseball....etc...

hope this clears the like vs as....issue...
