A C and E refer to the owning and living in a house, not to the goal itself
B is just awkward

E is correct

nice. this question stumped me on whether a pronoun could refer to a gerund phrase. i guess it does!

Owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, as it was of earlier generations

Owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, as owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land was (a goal) of earlier generations

went for E....for me a useful tool is...if I place the underline portion in a differnet order...

for example...

as it was of earlier generations owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults...

here E makes the most sense..and thus is the correct choice..it correctly refers to goals...and maintains the tense.

E is correct because "as" correctly introduces a "phrase" and "it" refers to "goal"

a goal of a majority of young adults, as it was of earlier generations.

it referes to a goal.
E 'it' may be bit confusing but all others do not fit in well in the sentence.

"IT" does not refer to GOAL but rather refer to "owning and living..."

Yes, E is the best.
