C is the best of all. However, I remember reading about the two sentences separated with a a semicolon should be independent clauses/ sentences.

Can somebody shed more light into this semi-colon concept?

You're correct.

According to Interstudy, a nonprofit organization that studies health maintenance organizations (HMO’s), only 36 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s were profitable last year; it estimates that this year 73 percent will be.

Independent clause it is.
it estimates that this year 73 percent will be.
it: subject
estimates: verb

it estimates that this year 73 percent will be [profitable].

"(C) only 36 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s were profitable last year; it estimates that this year 73 percent will be"

Can we end a sentence as above with "will be" . Profitable should have been mentioned here.

(A) they estimate that, in comparison to last year, when only 36 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s was profitable, this year 73 percent will be
(B) compared to only 36 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s being profitable last year, they estimate 73 percent would be this year
(C) only 36 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s were profitable last year; it estimates that this year 73 percent will be
(D) it estimates 73 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s would be profitable this year; last year that was only 36 percent
(E) only 36 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s last year were profitable, whereas they estimate it this year to be 73 percent

A - removing modifiers we get -> they estimate that this year 73 percent will be
This is an incomplete sentence.
B - This is run-on
C - Correct
D - "it" is ambigous
E - "they" is ambigous

Settled for C because the use of "that" in D sounded wrong

+1 for C.
Semicolon rightly splits the two statements independently & 'were profitable last year' is correctly organized.

I too picked...D but here "would be " is wrong...
Can some one explain ... "According to Interstudy , a nonprofit organization"...
here non profit organization should modify Interstudy...but that will be wrong.

I have the same question as someone else aked above

C seems right to me, but I didnt choose to go with that as the sentence after the semicolon seems incomplete. Any comments on that?

Is the clause after semicolon complete sentence?

answer is clear C.

<quote>"only 36 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s were profitable last year; it estimates that this year 73 percent will be"</quote>

the use of semicolumn makes the usage of "it" doubtless

(E) only 36 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s last year were profitable, whereas they estimate it this year to be 73 percent

In this option, "they estimate it", what does it refers to ? I think this also another reason to eliminate E.

Missed the one. I was pretty much decided on C. But chose E despite realizing that the "they" was ambiguous.

I made a silly mistake which can be and should be avoided. Good question.

ABE out for pronoun error. Bet C & D, C is winner.

(С) - seems the best one, for the reasons below:

(A) - they? who? Interstudy? or nonprofit organization? ...ambiguous
(B) - being profitable last year.. they estimate...again redundant and vague
(D and E) - change the idea of sentence and take it down the drain..

I was stuck between C and D.

In C, I don’t like how the clause after the semicolon just ends with “be”…but I’m guessing the sentence is stating, “it estimates that this year 73 percent will be [profitable].”

In D, “that” in the clause after the semicolon is not entirely clear. To be honest, I don’t like either C or D. Is this an official GMAT question?

Thanks.

the problem is with the structure.
According to Interstudy, an organization, it estimates

the following construction is not only correct but also sounds right.
According to Interstudy, an organization, only 607 HMO’s were profitable last year

One more thhing I find ambiguous is the usage of that....can you once again check in D...

IMO The problem with the answer D is the verb tense. The answer choices uses "would be" to predict what the HMO's profitability will be. It should be "will be" as the 73 percent has not happened yet.

D. it estimates 73 percent of the nation’s 607 HMO’s would be profitable this year; last year that was only 36 percent
