A. According to its proponents, a proposed new style of aircraft could, by skimming along the top of the atmosphere, fly between most points on Earth in under two hours.
Seems ok.

B. By skimming along the top of the atmosphere, proponents of a proposed new style of aircraft say it could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours.
Sounds like the proponents are skimming along.

C. A proposed new style of aircraft could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours, according to its proponents, with it skimming along the top of the atmosphere.
"with it" sounds wrong

D. A proposed new style of aircraft, say its proponents, could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours because of its skimming along the top of the atmosphere.
the phrase after "because of" is too long?

E. According to its proponents, skimming along the top of the atmosphere makes it possible that a proposed new style of aircraft could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours.
"makes it possible" repetitive?

I'd pick (A).

I have a BIG doubt on this question...

All answer choices say that "style could fly" instead of Aircraft itself.

Please let me know whether others think the same way or I am wrong???

The answer is A.

Chunjuwu:

E is easy to eliminate because of the "According to it's proponents, skimming along the surface of the atmosphere..." part is choppy and sounds like the proponents are skimming along the atmosphere.

I eliminated D mostly because it sounds choppy. Furthermore "because of its skimming.." is unidiomatic.

Must be (A)

D. A proposed new style of aircraft, say its proponents, could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours because of its skimming along the top of the atmosphere.
This is wrong because it is not cause/effect relationship. But the act of "skimming" qualifies the posibility "fly under two hours". Just think about "wing" allows "bird" to fly but "wing" does not cause "bird" to fly because "bird" does not have to.

E. According to its proponents, skimming along the top of the atmosphere makes it possible that a proposed new style of aircraft could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours.
This is also wrong because it makes me think that the act of "skimming" also "proposed new style of aircraft" then allows the aircraft to "fly under two hours".

I'm not convinced. We say "Birds can fly because they have wings." What's wrong with this?

A. According to its proponents, a proposed new style of aircraft could, by skimming along the top of the atmosphere, fly between most points on Earth in under two hours.

B. By skimming along the top of the atmosphere, proponents of a proposed new style of aircraft say it could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours.

C. A proposed new style of aircraft could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours, according to its proponents, with it skimming along the top of the atmosphere.

D. A proposed new style of aircraft, say its proponents, could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours because of its skimming along the top of the atmosphere.

E. According to its proponents, skimming along the top of the atmosphere makes it possible that a proposed new style of aircraft could fly between most points on Earth in under two hours.

B: seems like the proponents are skimming
C: "it" in "with it skimming" could refer to aircraft or Earth
D: "because of its skimming" is wordy and unidiomatic.
E: Uh... it is too wordy even to explain (for me atleast).

Hence the answer is A.

your sentence "Birds can fly because they have wings." is absolutely fine. If you say, "Birds fly because they have wings." then we would get into some trouble with sentence.

What I mean was that wings don't cause birds to fly, but wings allow birds to fly. "because" should be used as:

A happens because B happens

Hello, guys

in choice E, how can we make sure that its is meant to style.

Doesn't it sound ambiguous?
