(A) to ensure the next generation will contain creatures more like themselves than like others of the species. -[that is missing after ensure, themselves??]
(B) to ensure creatures more like itself than like others of its species will be contained in the next generation - to ensure that, will be contained - passive
(C) ensuring that the next generation contain creatures more like itself than others of its species. - contains
(D) that ensures the next generation contains creatures more like themselves than others of the species. - themselves?
(E) that ensures that the next generation contains creatures more like itself than like others of its species. - correct (ensures that.. + individual:itself)

we need "that" in the beginning so we are left with answeroptions D and E

now between D and E

what is ensured? -> "that" the next generation.... not the next generation

clear E for me
