Another D

the answer choice should have "indicates" and not "indicate", that is because the pattern of changes...indicate...

Therefore A, B and C are out

Between D and E, select D, because "descendent of" is the right idiom, and "descendent from" is wrong.

Thus D.

PS - I feel obliged to confess that I chose B initially. After checking Himalaya's answer, I looked back and realized my mistake.

D,

Pattern is singular thus should be followed by indicates. So we are down to D and E.
The correct idiom for indicate is indicate that.

Descendant of is the correct idiom, thus D

Both are correct idioms.

descendant from (need verb form before from)
descendant of (noun before of)

D is good.
