very tough.

as usually, the explanation is easy but the doing is hard. we need to realize which noun among many nouns in the sentence is subject of "brightening and knocking". scaning answer choices, we realize the subject in C is possibley most logic for the "brightening and knocking" .

in the test room, how do we realize this logic/meaning?

any one has any specific skill for this type of question? pls share

First, the path of what is being monitored? Obviously the cloud right? So D,E are out. Next, 'was what triggered'? That sounds terrible. This one is out. Between A and C note the which in A is modiying earth. This is wrong.

Therefore C is our best choice here

Hope this clarifies
Cheers!
