C, D, E can be eliminated right away. Choose bt A and B. B is wordier and more confusing.

(A) is correct
Japan is in danger of plunging into a depression that could strain a society ...

(B) that, because of double-digit unemployment, could be a severe strain for
"because of double-digit unemployment" is unclear, "be a severe strain for" is wordier

(C) with double-digit unemployment, and it could severely strain
Japan is in danger of plunging into a depression and it (meaning Japan) could severely strain a society ...

(D) with double-digit unemployment and could be a severe strain
Japan is in danger of plunging into a depression and could be a severe strain

(E) with double-digit unemployment and could severely strain
Same as (D)

Why is A correct? Can some one key in the rationale behind that choice?
Thanks

I am still a little confused because i thought that the unemployment would drain Japan whereas the "A" crowd says it is the Depression.

Well at least Japan's economy has been rebounding and we don't have to worry about this question.
