A is my choice

D & E changes the second part of the sentences.

B brings in the clause with because so it gets ruled out

C doesnt have the right reference for 'it'

Very Nice sentence.

That is necessary for the sentence. Between A and B, A looks concise and best.I will go with A.

It is between A and B for me and I'll go with A. E sounds funny to my ears! Anyone know the answer?

E says: 'Jan is in danger of plunging into a depression with blah...and (plunding into such a depression) could severly strain blah...

That is not clear from E. I would go with A. The'that' in A make it clearer.

it cannot refer to 'plunging into depression' condition. that's my take on it.

By POE, I will qickly eliminate C, D and E, because the statemnt needs to start with 'that'. that leaves me to debate between A and B.
B suffers from an awkwardness in its final part. Thus leaving A as the clear choice for this one

stcuk btw A or B, go with A. I think they are using two conjuctions here, that and because...which I believe is wrong....so A is better. IMO ofcourse.

(A)
It is the depression that "could severely strain..." not the Japan. So we can eliminate C, D, and E. For choice B, because of "because of" and "could be a severe strain for", we can eliminate it also. My final choice will be A.

i am confused with all of these options. the correct sentence should be

'According to some economists, Japan is in danger of plunging into a depression with double-digit unemployment that could severely strain a society that regards lifetime employment as a virtual right of citizenship.'
