Please explain your answer

(A), (B) and (C) are not well formed.
Between (D) and (E), (D) is too wordy and also it doesn't convey the meaning correctly.

The right choice would be (E). What's the QA?

(C) twice those the 1977 survey reported

(E) twice the number reported in the 1977 survey

Go with E as it is grammatically correct. Look for the incorrect use of words in the other choices

My analysis- when making comparison then twice is used.

(A) doubling those reported in the 1977 survey

used of doubling is wrong and second "those" does not have a referrant. If you think that it is referring to number then you are wrong because it is never mentioned in the sentence and even that needs to be singular(that).

(B) to double the number the 1977 survey reported
infinitive phrase with double is wrong to descibe another phrase.

(C) twice those the 1977 survey reported

No referrant for those.

(D) twice as much as those reported in the 1977 survey

no referrant for those. Bit wordy too.

(E) twice the number reported in the 1977 survey
No error. It correctly uses twice and also mentioned "the number" instead of those
So I will pick E.

I am not sure about the referent issue for choice D If the choice D was

"(D) twice as many as those reported in the 1977 survey".

Would you have chosen E over D?

I agree with N750 infact its a very good observation.

ioiio: I will still take E as the correct thing would be "twice as many as that reported in the 1977 survey".

Few more points are

1. "the number" is always singular
2. Much in D is incorrectly used of countable things.

Guys.

Thanks for all the insights. The OA is indeed E. Since I was solving some 40 SCs at a rapid pace, I had selected D and then while reviewing, I was fighting with myself over D or E. But with all your useful points, all my doubts have evaporated. This forum is great.

Correct answer should be
1. Double the number reported in 1977.
2. Twice as Many as in 1977
Lets see which one matches.
A: No
B: No
C: No
D: No
E: Relatively, I will choose E as the best answer :?:

Good SC question.

Rgajare14- Next time when you post can you please bold the area which needs to be corrected or underline it? it's much easier on the eyes that way. Thank You :)

I think "the number of X is EQUAL TO the number of Y" is more appropriate
