According to the Federal Trade Commission, the recent increase in the amount of irrigation systems sold by foreign conglomerates in the United States has resulted in more expensive prices for the American consumer.

(a) amount of irrigation systems sold by foreign conglomerates in the United States has resulted in more expensive
(b) number of irrigation systems sold by foreign conglomerates in the United States has resulted in higher
(c) numbers of irrigation systems sold by foreign conglomerates in the United States has resulted in higher
(d) number of irrigation systems sold by foreign conglomerates in the United States has resulted in more expensive
(e) amount of irrigation systems sold by foreign conglomerates in the United States has resulted in higher

original choice has 2 errors -
1. irrigation systems are count nouns and amount is the incorrect word we need "number of" - eliminate A,E
2. the non underline part has the word prices - therefore the underlined part can not end with expensive - its redundant -eliminate D

In choice C- "numbers of" is an incorrect phase and should never be used in GMAT. Eliminate choice C.

Correct answer is B.

yashii9 covers almost all the things here!
Just a note that "expensive" can be an adjective for stuffs.
For e.g: I wear an expensive watch.
However "expensive" sounds ridiculous when it acts as an adjective for prices.
For e.g: Iphone's expensive price will lead to increased android market share.
This is clearly redundant.

One doubt : Comparitive word must be followed by THAN. Is it ? None of the answers have THAN. Can you explain in detail the usage of comparitive words.

Thanks.

Hey!
Than is used for bipartisan comparisons.
For example
I have more watches than him.
But for a generic statement than is not necessary.
For example: Recent hike in petrol prices forces people to pay more for the same distance.

I would suggest that when you are discussing new questions, please address them in new threads.

Nonetheless, I agree with you:
Portion of interest is not countable, hence greater than is correct.
No. of votes is countable, hence fewest is correct.
