I go with E on this!

Reason: "a cannon shooting dead chickens " implies that the cannon itself is shooting dead chickens which is not correct.

therefore A is out - and out of the rest whereever "itself" is, eliminate that choice (as cannon in itself cannot perform any action)

Now I am just left with E - the answer :-)
