56. Acid rain and snow result from the chemical reactions between industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids.
(A) with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
(B) with atmospheric water vapor producing highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
(C) and atmospheric water vapor which has produced highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
(D) and atmospheric water vapor which have produced sulfuric and nitric acids which are highly corrosive
(E) and atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids

Since we have between A & B are ruled out.
C has singular verb.

C has singular verb.

you are almost there. its among, C, D and E. D, not C, has a verb problem. so D is also out.

Betweeen C and E, C has a problem with which, which lacks a come before it.

So E.

I am not clear on E?

I thought A was correct becasue idiom between X and Y was correctly used so they not add and again.

Himalaya- Can you pls explain on why E??

between industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids.

The comparison is between industrial emissions and atmospheric water vapor. The point is to confuse you into thinking between sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, but they are types of industrial emission.

D is wordy here. ie which have produced...which are highly corrosive. E is much more concise. Also, which have produced suggests that this has happened in the past. The context of the sentence suggests that this happens generally.

between industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids.

Between industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor... The two reactions are (1) the industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, and (2) atmospheric water vapor. Between...and...with doesn't work anyways. Between implies two things so we have to assume that the two things are the above (1) and (2). Does that make sense at all?

This question was discussed here a few days back with explanations as elaborate as exact chemical reactions which happen (evidently some chemical engineer here got a bit carried away)

I was also fooled into thinking "with" was ok because of the presence of "and". But after reading the answer choice it looks E. D was the first one I striked out though.
