Adam won beating lenin- Based on this and without any other evidence or supporting fact, it is concluded that adam must have worked hard, showing that underlying assumption is that adam could have beaten lenin only if she trained hard. which is given in C.

Ans C it is!

Fact 1: Adam won the race beating Lenin.
Fact 2: Lenin is the winner in each of four years.
Conclusion: Adam trained hard.

Let's make few assumptions before checking the answer choices:
A1: There was no dip in Lenin performance and Adam's performance improved because of hard training.
A2: No other factor contributed to Adam's advantage such as, superior boat.

Let's look at the answer choices:
(A) Lenin did not train as hard as Adam trained: Incorrect. Even if Lenin trained as hard, he could have still lost the race.
(B) If Adam trained hard, she would win the sailboat race : Incorrect. This is one of the ways he can win the race but not the only way.
(C) Adam could beat a four-time winner only if she trained hard : Bingo!! This makes it a necessary condition.
(D) If Lenin trained hard, she would win the sailboat race : Incorrect. Nothing to do with Lenin's training.
(E) Lenin is usually a faster sailboat racer than Adam : Incorrect. Nothing to do with the conclusion.

Guys I can understand why C is better than B but still can you provide a profound reason to eliminate B. The confusion between b and c took me around a minute.
thanks in advance

In order to logically conclude that Adam won due to training hard, we need the assumption that this is the only way She can win it. The mention of "only" in choice C separated from choice B. Choice B provides just one of the ways of achieving it.

For example:

1. (As per Choice B) If you score V40, you could get 700 score in GMAT.
You scored 700 but your score was V38 Q51.

2. (As per C) You can score 700 in GMAT only if you score V40.
You scored 700. It implies you got V40.

If you look at the premise on which conclusion is based, you'd notice information 'by beating Lenin' would become unnecessary if you choose B. on the other hand choice C takes into account all of it.
Hope it helps.
