Watch out for Opening modifier Added to worries about budget cuts and cost of living increases which appear at the beginning of a sentence, separated from the rest of the sentence by a comma.

After finding, ask this question - Does this modify the administrators correctly?

Added to worries about budget cuts and cost of living increases, the administrators of public health care facilities must contend with the possibility of a strike by employees.

(A) Added to worries about budget cuts and cost of living increases - cannot modify the administrators
(B) Added to budget cuts and increases in the cost of living - cannot modify the administrators
(C) In addition to worry about cuts in the budget and as the cost of living increases - worrying is better than worry. Also, worry about and as the cost are not parallel
(D) Added to their worrying about budget cuts and cost of living increases - their worrying and cost of living? seems not parallel
(E) In addition to worrying about budget cuts and increases in the cost of living - Opening modifier correctly describes the administrators - Correct

KUDOS
whatever comes before the comma must modify "the administrators".

Neither (a) nor (b) could modify the administrators, so those two are out.

(C) should have "worrying" instead of "worry" and the second half isn't parallel - eliminate (c).

(D) is very awkwardly worded, so unless (e) has a grammatical error, we'll get rid of (d).

(E) is gramatically correct and stylistically superior to (d): choose (e).

Hi,

Sorry, i don t get it. To me, c is the best because in e, it sounds like that the budget cuts belong to the cost of living.
Ipin addition, i would say that an article is missing before 'increases' in e.

C states clearly two reasons in addition to which administrators.... According to my understanding of the sentence.

Can somebody give more explanations please??

Thank you

Hi Mate

In Option C there are few issues….Now author is saying that administrators are worrying about 2 things so basically there are two "worries"….In option C it refers that "In addition to worry"….it is wrong to say in addition to worry…it should be worrying….Also "cut in the budget and as the cost of living increases" are not parallel. It would have been better if it was to say….cut in the budget and increases in cost of living…..So the correct answer is C.

Thank you, i think it is clear now.
Have a nice week end

After all the explanation, the correct answer is C? is it a typo? R26, you have also endorsed it.

IMHO the answer should be either C or E once the typos are corrected.

C is better when evaluating the infinitive to worry but the clause after and is not parallel in C

IMO E

correct usage is ....in addition to X and Y.....and X ,Y should be parrallel.....option C has error of parrallelism

cost of living increases
(B) Added to budget cuts and increases in the

IMO the answer is clear cut E due to the parallelism ... the participle for of verbs contended and worrying.
Only E has the correct parallelism

Dear Daagh, dear all sorry for the delay.

I maintain what i have said in terms of meaning : in e, it sounds like the 'budget cuts' belongs to the cost of livings if 'increases' is indeed intended to be a noun. (I have not been abe to find an example with a plural form)

However, i agree with most of you for the parallelism: it should be 'worrying'.

Added to worries about budget cuts and cost of living increases, the administrators of public health care facilities must contend with the possibility of a strike by employees.

(A) Added to worries about budget cuts and cost of living increases Other than reasons already stated it makes no freaking sense, how can you add to worries if there is nothing before it
(B) Added to budget cuts and increases in the cost of living - Not parallel and also makes no freaking sense, what the heck is added to referring to budget cuts or cost of living or both
(C) In addition to worry about cuts in the budget and as the cost of living increases - There is no need for an infinitive here and not parallel
(D) Added to their worrying about budget cuts and cost of living increases - Who is their? And not parallel
(E) In addition to worrying about budget cuts and increases in the cost of living - In addition to x and y is correct.

A and B are incorrect becuase the begining phrase incorrectly modifies administrators.

C is not parallel in the list cuts and as the cost.

D. Their is not necessary and is unclear

E. this is parallel, does not incorrectly modify and does not have any other problems - therefore, it is the correct answer.

Can anybody clarify?

I think you are confusing increase with a verb, when "increases" is working as a noun here. Therefore, it should be "incresases", because the structure of the sentence needs 2 nouns ("budget cuts" and "increases in the cost of living") to be parallel. "Increases" is functioning as a noun, not as a verb.

I don´t see the reason why "worrying" is better than "worry". Someone?

Increase in the market costs deterred the company from expanding
Increase is acting as a noun.

I agree that it is working as noun but I guess increase would be better.
