Hi all:
I'm interested in gaining admission to University of Michigan -Ann Arbor (Ross) School of Business MBA program. A little about me, I graduated from high school in 2004 (3.4 GPA, ACT 24). I attended University of Michigan Dearborn for a few semesters (left with a 2.7 GPA), and transferred to Wayne State University in Detroit. I started as a Pre-Med student and completed all the required courses of the program, albeit poorly. After realizing I'd rather be in business, I changed gears and started working on a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting. Since I wanted to start working as soon as possible and realizing my GPA took a hit from the past Pre-Med classes, I rushed through my undergrad. I graduated with a 2.41 GPA.
After applying for numerous jobs, without success, I realized a MBA might be the answer. I wrote the GMAT once, and earned a 580. I strongly believe this is an understatement of what my actual potential. In the practice exams, I usually scored in the upper 600s. In order to start immediately, I applied at Wayne State University's MBA program and was accepted. I am currently in my first semester, but my GPA so far (almost all coursework for the semester is completed) is a 3.7.
Would it be beneficial if I completed the coursework at Wayne State? I only have 24 more credits until I receive a MBA; I can be done in two more semesters. The cost of tuition is also much lower than the other local schools I looked into ($550/credit hour). Out the door, I'll be looking at around $20K for the MBA, seems like a bargain.
With that being said, it seems like all MBAs are not the same. There is quite a bit of emphasis on Ross, but is it really that much better? Out the door, it is about 70K. They will not transfer credits either.
My professional experience is working full-time in EMS/Safety for three years. I also have six years of part-time experience (gain share of company per year of unpaid service) as the book-keeper for my family's company.
I have also contemplated the PhD/DBA in Business at Wayne State University. It is only 60 credits plus dissertation, meaning only 28 credits more after my MBA at WSU. Would this be a better route than a MBA at Ross?
With my above background, what are the chances of me gaining acceptance to Ross part-time MBA program?
Thanks.
