Admission & Work Experience Doubt! [#permalink] New post 02 Sep 2011, 07:08
Hello all,

My background is as follows:

I completed my B.E in Computer Engineering from Mumbai University with a First Class in 2010.
Thereafter ive been working with my father and helping him manage his business in Africa(It's a Supermarket).

Now ive got a doubt:
Will this experience be relevant when i apply for an MBA to schools like ISB or any other Business School maybe after a year or so? Or is it mandatory to be working in an IT firm, or in a Bank or something of that sort?

On most B-school websites they state that you need to have relevant work-ex. This being my family business, it's relevant to business, but i'm kinda confused whether this will help.

Can someone please shed some light onto this and give me some advice? Would be great.
Thanks :)

It's not mandatory, but it's important to have some form of "office job" experience - i.e. working in an office environment, whether it's engineering, business, law, etc. If you were working in your family's head offices (i.e. at a corporate office), then yes it would be valued. If you are helping your dad stack boxes in the back and shelve groceries, as honorable as that kind of labor may be, it's not something that bschool adcoms value, especially if you have no corporate experience. You never know I suppose as anything can happen (you could get in), so don't let this stop you from applying to ISB.
