Admit With Scholarship Last year-WL This Year? Help??? [#permalink] New post 01 Feb 2008, 18:18
Here is the situation. I was admitted with a scholarship last year to a local school, Katz.
My stats are 690 GMAT and a 3.81 GPA. Just your average white guy..

I could not attend last year due to some personal issues. Last spring/summer I had a health condition which caused me to not be able to swallow correctly or at all..I could not eat solids without feeling as if food was getting stuck.-it was called allergic esophagitis. I started having it in April and it didn't get resolved until early August, only a couple of weeks before orientation started. I didn't think I was going to be able to attend a program since obviously I could not eat in public (would choke and spit) and had to puree and eat soft foods..I could not socialize or network. I developed a fear of choking. The doctors kept on telling me it was acid reflux..finally I got some new German doctor that was familiar with this condition-it is not widely known or understood in the adult population..He fixed me..it took the doctors over 3 months to figure out what the hell was going on. He had to put a balloon in my esophagus and dilate it and then I had to swallow steroids.. Needless to say it wore on me mentally and physically.

Then right after that was resolved in early August..t I had to help my mother out financially to the tune of $4800 since she had to get her roof fixed. That was just too much for me to take in one summer. I contacted the admissions office and advised them I DEFINITELY could not attend after that happened. I was hoping to get myself physically better so I could then that family issue hit. I was actually in touch with them numerous times in the summer to let them know about my medical condition. I scanned and e-mailed all of my medical records to them to let them know I was not bullshitting them and making up excuses. I was literally a mess last summer before the financial situation with my family hit. I never thought I would be able to eat again with friends/family..may sound irrational, but when you struggle at every meal for a couple of months, its understandable you would begin to have those thoughts.

I reapplied this year. Nothing has changed in my application. I went from admission with scholarship to a waitlist. They said the application pool was more competitive...but give me a break..I was in the top tenth percentile in terms of GMAT and GPA last year. I don't think the GMAT Score/GPA could have gone up that much in one year to make me go from an admit with scholarship to waitlist.. The average GMAT for last year's class was 615. They don't grant deferrals..technically it's a reapplication, but the Adcoms review it with the knowledge that I was an admit last year.

I am pretty upset about this. It's not like I blew the program off because I felt like it or because I wanted to go bartend on a tropical island. I had issues that anyone else would have deferred with. They knew early in the summer I was having some issues. I didn't drop this on them last minute. I told them I was trying to get myself better. I provided them adequate documentation. I am hoping they would have some humanity and review my application in light of the fact I wanted to go, but just got sidetracked with all of the situations that were going on and were out of my control.

I am not sure what to do. I pretty angry. They sort of misled me by indicating that it was ok for me to defer. They told me upfront I may not receive the same scholarship award, but they seemed to imply being admitted to the program would not be an issue.

Now I am behind in terms of other applications. I didn't think I needed to apply to any other schools. I didn't even ask anyone to right recommendations for me yet since I didn't see the need to. I am also at a disadvantage in terms of getting any funding from other schools because of this-usually the scholarship deadline is February 1st or around there. I feel they were misleading, whether intentionally or unintentionally, in their presentation of the reapplication process. I am not sure what to do.

James,

Sorry for your troubles. I don't think you handled the situation poorly, and I do agree that your numbers do not seem to justify a wait list at Katz. Unfortunately, at this point your only option is to play their wait-list game, and -- if they allow it -- send them update wait-list letters and additional reco letters/letters of support to confirm your interest (maybe they're trying to test that interest by seeing how you'll handle the wait-list hassle).

I suppose you could write a calm, mature, respectful letter to their director of admissions explaining that you feel certain assurances were offered you that have not been delivered, but that's crap shoot and could backfire on you. You have to decide whether it's worth the risk of peeving them off in the off chance they'll admit you know and save you the wait-list hassle.

I don't know your age but if you're not over 27 you could apply again this fall. Your numbers suggest you could do better than Katz. I don't see other options.

Good luck,

Thanks for the response. I am an older applicant. I will turn 30 in May...

I think I am just screwed in terms of going for a full-time MBA. Probably too late for me now.
I know that my numbers are probably higher than the average for Katz, but I wanted to stay in the area..I am from Pittsburgh. I am not a "quant jock" so CMU was out of the question.. Katz had decent placement stats for finance. I also went to Pitt undergrad. I would have probably went to Katz right out of undergrad IF the two year program had been in place. I kind of graduated at a weird time..they only had the one year program and it required experience then the two year program came into existence.

I am not sure if I should just apply to some off the wall schools such as LSU or Missouri..those were the only other major state schools that I found which I could still possibly get funding from and both are close to Katz on the US News Rankings.., and their application does not require any letters of recommendation. Not that I wouldn't want to get letters of rec..I just may have trouble getting them considering I work in Pittsburgh and my supervisors may wonder what the heck I am doing applying to those schools.

Katz said they will give me an answer by the end of the month. This has just been strange. I was not expecting a waitlist decision. Totally blindsided me:(

James,

I understand, but don't let your emotions cloud your proactive, positive pursuit of a place in the coming class. Keep your eyes on the prize and just jump through the hoops they put up.

I received the official notice of the ding today.
I am clueless as to what happened. This does not make any sense to me whatsoever. It doesn't make any sense to anyone I have spoken to..I e-mailed the actual dean of the school a little earlier today. I am looking for some answers. I do not think what they did to me was right or even ethical (the admissions officer advised me I could be deferred but may not get a scholarship)

Regardless, from your experience, do you have any idea as to what could have happened? This just does not make any sense.
I am trying to get some answers and some closure..

Jim,

Since your situation is so unusual, I wouldn't want to speculate at their reasons. I think it's something you should follow up on with the school (in a respectful way) and tell ask them, given the circumstances of your case, if they would consider shedding more light on the specific reasons behind your ding. It's OK to tell them that this meant a great deal to you, but I would leave the "unethical" language out for now.

Hope this helps.

Paul,

Here is an update. I e-mailed the Dean two weeks ago and he talked to the adcom...She called me on Tuesday and they offered me admission. However, when I asked the adcom why I didn't get in this year and got in last year, they said they had a new criteria..placeability...Last year it was basically GMAT GPA, and essays..They just had concerns about me being able to move into finance from my current position.

It may seem crazy that I am having reservations about going now since I fought to get in, but since she said there may be issues regarding placeability, I am wondering if it is the right move, especially since I will be around 70k in debt due to no scholarship this year. I told them I would need to think about it, and I e-mailed her today telling her I want to meet with Career Services regarding my placeability to see if those issues can be overcome. I also think my age may be a factor in terms of placeability-making a switch after 30..(will be 30 in May) I currently have a non-finance job at an insurance company..

In between being put on the waitlist and the appeal on the ding, I picked up USNEWS and World Report and looked at the web sites for schools ranked 25 and above..I needed ones that didn't require recommenders (since it was too late for me to get any) and ones for which the application deadline didn't pass..Ifound only two..LSU and Missouri-I sent apps to those schools..I know very little about those schools other than they are ranked around Katz according to US News and have GMAT scores as high or higher than Katz..I am not looking to make a ton of money-just looking for job happiness and a career switch.

Maybe I should just forget about this whole dream.

Any thoughts/comments...might it be hard for me to make the switch into finance due to the fact I am older and do not have any prior finance experience?

Thanks for the update. It will certainly be tougher for you to make the switch, given your age and the current economic climate, but not impossible. I suppose depends on how badly you want it and how much short-term sacrifice your're willing to make to achieve the switch. I think of Katz as a better school than Missouri or LSU, and I would it has better placement success given its location than Missouri or LSU, which might only be able to help you in their regions. You need to figure out what you really want, and relatively soon since Katz may not want to wait around.
