I was going to wait for a more traditional time frame, but they knew I would be leaving at some point anyhow, and I wanted to make it as easy as possible on everyone. I'm the only one of me here. So.... now I'm going to kill a lot of time posting babble and nonsense on here. Until my replacement trainee arrives on Monday, that is.

Sharmar, are you going to Ross for sure?

Hi All - I'm an MBA2 at Ross so if you have any questions ask away. As far as housing goes many people live alone, but plenty of people also live with roommates either in apartments or houses. It really just depends on what you want.

Hope to see all of you at GBR!

Hi Sarah, thank you for taking questions. I did have a question about the Detroit airport. It seems that it's at an "awkward" distance from Ann Arbor. The last few times I visited AA, I rented a car. After I move to AA, what's the best way to travel to and from the airport? Taxis are convenient, but may get expensive ($100-$120 round-trip) for someone who travels a lot. Michigan Flyer is fairly convenient and cheaper ($30 round-trip), but they have a rigid schedule and don't run as frequently as I'd like. Plus the bus station may not be close to where I live. What do Ross students usually do?

So I'm about 90% set on Woodbury Gardens and have made an appointment on Friday. I have a couple of other appointments a bit closer to school (that I found off Craigslist) but the washer/dryer/dishwasher/disposal convenience + 20 month lease + 50% rent during the first summer have more or less sold me. I know from experience that subletting over the summer is pretty difficult, so I'd rather take the 50% discount and just call it a day. Also, I figure the proximity to school is undercut by the lack of conveniences at home. The downside is that I will be cutting it very, very close to the Room and Board budget in my financial aid.

How's everyone's house hunt going?

I didn't make any appointments, but I think i'll probably tag along when you go visit. I think I'm pretty set on woodbury gardens also. Give me a ring when you go okay?

No problem. The appointment is for Friday at 4:30 pm-just in case you have something you'd rather be doing.

Ugh I've been so busy I haven't even looked at GMATClub in days! WEIRD!

What's the final GBR headcount? I'm leaving this afternoon/evening so I'll be there tomorrow morning.

I haven't had a chance to do any househunting or set up appointments, either. Luckily I'm in Chicago so I can go back pretty easily, but if anyone has any great tips that haven't been mentioned on the Google group, I'd love to hear them.

I'm a SY here so I can provide insights/tips if you let me know what you are looking for. For what it's worth I love my building. Its about a 5 min walk to Ross with mostly MBAs and the landlord is great. Two best features: covered parking and free laundry :)

Oh that would be awesome! Thanks!! Here's what I'm looking for:

-I like living in converted houses rather than apartment buildings.
-I want to be as cheap as possible. I need a multipurpose room, a usable kitchen (dishwasher not necessary, but counterspace!), and a bathroom.
-Clean and spartan is great.
-I like sunlight.
-No car! Parking not an issue, but close enough for walking/biking.
-Laundrey in the building is a definite plus.
-I kinda hate carpet.

So from what you've said it seems that ideally you would live in an apt/house close to Ross and its what I'd recommend without a car. Anywhere else is kind of a pain carless (in my opinion).

1. Few places have hardwood floors most have carpets
2. The closer to central campus you are the higher the rent (generally speaking). Most 1 bedrooms close to campus are probably in the 800-1000 range depending on size. It is much cheaper if you are willing to live in a house with other people.
3. If you want a converted house split into apts check out the housing fair and talk to companies there. Note: you want to talk to the student housing companies NOT places like Woodbury that have apt complexes farther away.
4. Most places should have laundry in the building and may or may not have parking. If they do you could rent the space to someone.

***There are some good apartments very close to Ross, but as in any university town the quality of housing varies greatly. So I strongly recommend against renting anything sight unseen.... There are some nice apartments and some really terrible ones.

I'll also add that you don't need to find housing at GBR. You may feel overwhelmed and an urge to sign a lease or housing will all disappear. That's not true. You can find housing well into the summer and there's going to be a lot of activity on the google group with people looking for roommates.

If you're absolutely unable to come back to find housing, then you might want to sign a lease at GBR, and probably with an apartment complex since that's the easiest option. But if you're not in a rush, then take your time. There's plenty that you will come up in the next couple months and through the summer. Also, you don't need to come back if someone else has done the legwork and looking for a roommate. You may have to trust someone else's judgement, but that will save you a trip out to AA.

Thank you both for your input. I have a couple of appointments over the weekend (including houses with roommates, which I have finally accepted as a possibility), but there's already so much going on that I'm not going to push it. I can definitely come back, and if I won't have a problem finding housing in a month or so, that will free me up for other things now. Like Erb events!

Two more general questions: Do either of you recommend for/against any housing companies? And are there areas that tend to have more undergrads (to be avoided)?

Looking forward to meeting some of you!

I don't rent from a company, its just a lady who is awesome. From what I hear though some of the companies are better than others. Undergrads are pretty much everywhere in central campus, but if from Ross if you go on Hill towards Washentaw that area has a large concentration of fraternity houses (read: parties) and from what I understand can be quite loud. I live in the other direction on Hill (Hill & Division) which is usually pretty quiet except during football games.

I only really participated on Friday (Thursday I was working, Saturday I did my own Ann Arbor thing), but I had a great time. The school was decked out in its Sunday best - sushi buffet, craft beer, "classes" taught by department heads. It was great to meet everyone, though, and get a sneak peek at the next couple of years. I'm SO glad I'm ending up at Ross. The students are real, down-to-earth, funny, witty, the opportunities abound! Anu1979 and I did get stuck in line in a dank basement bar trying to get to the student band performance, but as soon as they played the opening riffs to Hot for Teacher, all was forgiven.
