I think the answer should be C.

D suggests that the adults have little chance of recognizing and treating the symptoms. It gives an impression that adult have little chance of recognizing and then treating themselves. They are not expected to treat themselves but the they should get treated.

What you guys think?

D also sounds like " .. treting symptooms .." in general ... not their own symptoms.

I vote for C.

Can any of the forums "experts" throw light on why D is the answer?

D is not idiomatic at all.

given "chance" takes appositive noun clauses, any reason for A being wrong, other than ETS way of hiding--more idiomatic.
