Advantages of an American MBA in Canada? [#permalink]

Hello everyone,

I live in Toronto, Canada and I'm in the process of applying to some Canadian MBA schools Rotman (UofT), Ivey (Western), Schulich (York Univ.) and Queen's.

I'm also thinking of applying to some American schools Wharton, Kellogg, Columbia and Chicago. I would love a change and would like the chance to spend some time somewhere else other than Toronto. However I do eventually want to come back and work in Toronto.

I was wondering what is the perception of these American schools by employers in Canada/Toronto? Is there an advantage of going to the American schools listed above versus the Canadian schools I choose in the eyes of Canadian employers?

Any feedback from those familiar with this would be greatly appreciated.

To be totally honest, I don't know too well how Canadian employers perceive American MBAs vs. Canadian MBAs. But, my guess is that they think very highly of the top ten American schools, maybe even more so than the top Canadian schools. Just anecdotally, I get the impression that the "big name" U.S. schools are also considered bigger in Canada than their Canadian counterparts. (If someone disagrees with me here, please jump in!)

One note: If you want to get hired by a Canadian company right out of b-school, you'll probably have to do more of your own job search. I don't think many Canadian firms recruit at U.S. schools, simply because they probably have a hardt ime getting Americans to move up north. But, that doesn't mean that they don't want MBAs from those schools. If you contact them on your own, I bet they'll be interested.
