Hi ,

Query: Can an adverb be used befor Verb+Ing modifiers when used as a result of an event.

Ex: At sometime in our past ancestors suffered an event, greatly reducing their numbers?

The Verb-ing modifier with comma before that modifies the whole clause, and hence the above construction is fine. Also, this sentence is an example of cause (an event) and effect (reducing numbers) scenario.

Ing verbs are present participle and hence an adjective. But when separated with comma they modify the whole clause. But since, the ing verbs are adjective they must refer a noun - so it refer the subject and modify the clause ( so it must have a logical subject). It denote the time sequence same as the main clause - both the action taking place at the same time.

My cousin took extra class in every semester in the college, graduating in three years. -- here graduating is an adjective referring the subject and the verb ing phrase is an "adverb of result" for the main clause - both taking place at the same time...

Your example is perfectly fine !!
