6. Advertisement:
For sinus pain, three out of four hospitals give their
patients Novex. So when you want the most effective
painkiller for sinus pain, Novex is the one to choose.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously
undermines the advertisement’s argument?
(A) Some competing brands of painkillers are
intended to reduce other kinds of pain in
addition to sinus pain.
(B) Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex
will do so for those patients who cannot
tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use.
(C) Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their
products to hospitals by selling these products
to the hospitals at the lowest price the manu-
facturers can afford.
(D) Unlike some competing brands of painkillers,
Novex is available from pharmacies without a
doctor’s prescription.
(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more
effective than competing brands of painkillers
that have been on the market longer than
Novex.

B?
It suggests OTHER reason for being that popular among hospitals (the fact, which is in focus of this argument).

A
It establishes the fact that other brands are better than Novex in treating all kinds of pains including sinus pain..

Real Tough!!
Novex Effective because majority of hospitals recommend.
A...so what? it doesnt do anything to the argument
B...This is a bit vague...we are told 3 out of 4 hospitals prescribe...so we dont know whether MANY includes how many?
C...we dont whether MANY includes manufacturer of Novex
E...it kind of neither weakens or strengthens the argument
D...the argument says that hospitals recommend novex and since they do that, its effective...well...D says Novex is not a prescription medicine and is available freely...the advertisement misleads here...D is best
Thanks

I think C is the right answer.
A looks to be decoy.
B is ambiguous.
C is best because hospitals get Novex at a lower cost and therefore reduce their cost, assuming that competing drugs are of the same quality. This implies that Novex may not be the best to choose. If Novex and say for example, drug XYZ are of same quality and available at a differential price, then patient will prefer XYZ.(WEAKENS THE ARGUMENT)
D supports the argument
E supports the argument
Any different views?

Praet,
Why should we believe that all drugs including Novex, given in hospitals, are prescribed and not available over the counter without a valid prescription. I did not see it in the stimulus. We need to find a choice that offsets the effectiveness of Novex ..

I almost agree with Praetorian.
A is irrelevant. We have to undermine the argument (it appeals to hospitals choice to prove its effectiveness). We have to submit some explanation that they do it for the reasons different from effectiveness.
B gives us this reason. (some patients just can not tolerate other drugs).
C - Praetorian 100% right here. We do not know either Novex included in that MANY or not.
D - this choice gives us one more eaxpalnation of hospitals choice. There are no vague and ambiguous MANY here as are there in choice B, but why I still chose B instead of D is because prescription implies free sale of drugs to patients, not hospitals. Intuitively I feel that B is too weak, but D refers to prescription, which I can't figure out has what to do with hospitals??
