Advertisement: For sinus pain, three out of four hospitals give their patients Novex. So when you want the most effective painkiller for sinus pain, Novex is the one to choose.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously undermines the advertisement’s argument?
(A) Some competing brands of painkillers are intended to reduce other kinds of pain in addition to sinus pain.
(B) Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex will do so for those patients who cannot tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use.
(C) Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their products to hospitals by selling these products to the hospitals at the lowest price the manufacturers can afford.
(D) Unlike some competing brands of painkillers, Novex is available from pharmacies without a doctor’s prescription.
(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more effective than competing brands of painkillers that have been on the market longer than Novex.

B my guess
If in 3 out of 4 cases, the usual drug is not tolerated by the patients... then the reason for treating with Novex rather then another drug is due to patient's non-compatilibity of the drug and not due to better effect.
A) if anything, would only strengthen the argument
C) May be true for Novex and for other drugs. Thus, does not allow Noves in favor for other drugs.
D) Drugs given to patients in hospitals are prescribed by doctors anyways. Thus, prescription does not decide, which drug to give.
E) Strengthens the argument

Premise
1) 3 out of 4 hospital prescribe Novex for sinus pain
Conclusion
2) Novex is the most effective painkiller fo sinus pain
To undermine the argument, find a choice that says Novex is not the most effective, or some other drug is equally effective
(A) - irrelevant
(B) - still doesn't say Novex is not the most effective
(C) - gives us a reason why Novex is used. Cost is purely the reason for their usage, not effectiveness
(D) - irrelevant
(E) - does not undermine arguemnt
C is the best choice.

C is my pick too.
If a particular drug is sold the cheapest, it will be most widely in clinics. This is the case with Novex and this has got nothing to do with the 'effectiveness' of the drug. Hence, it is wrong to conclude that Novex is the most effective drug.

Yes, there must be some other reason why hospitals are dispensing Novex; they can make a substantial profit.
Clearly C.

This is definetly C.
We need another reason why 3 out of 4 hospitals are recommending the product. C tells us that the maufacturer reduces the price to hospitals...which makes sense why the hospitals use it.

I would say B
With answer C you are inferring that Novex must sell to the hospitals at a lower price. The answer only states that "many companies" do it, there is no specific reference towards Novex's manufacturer.
In statement B however, it plainly states that many hospitals use Novex not because it is the best treatment but because it is better tolerated.
I would say the argument is: Since so many hospitals use it, Novex is the most effective treatment. Statement B is the only choice that directly addresses why this is not the case.
Brendan.

I think it's C too.
It assigns a reason for why hospitals are using this drug which is other than the drug's effectiveness.

Most hospitals use Novex. So Novex is the most effective painkiller for sinus pain.
This is faulty reasoning by gratuitous assumption.
Ask for weakening. (Perhaps the reason most hospitals use Novex is not because it is the most effective. Perhasp there's other reasons?)
(A) Some competing brands of painkillers are intended to reduce other kinds of pain in addition to sinus pain.
Yes, so? We are only concerned with sinus pain here. Can't rebuke the claim.
(B) Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex will do so for those patients who cannot tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use.
That means Novex's pretty good isn't it?
(C) Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their products to hospitals by selling these products to the hospitals at the lowest price the manufacturers can afford.
Perhaps the reason hospitals like to use it is because it is so cheap to the hospitals.
(D) Unlike some competing brands of painkillers, Novex is available from pharmacies without a doctor’s prescription.
Yes. And hospitals like to use it too. Shouldn't you also use it?
(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more effective than competing brands of painkillers that have been on the market longer than Novex.
This one strongly supports the claim.
(D)

Most widely selling does not mean most effective.
Novax is most widely used because it is the cheapest.
Thus, I vote for (C).

C should be the answer [#permalink]
25 Oct 2005, 21:18
I guess C is the answer.
Here the author is basing his assumption that 3/4 hospitals are using Novex. He is basing his assumption on the fact that its only the effectiveness of Noves which is forcing these hospitals to use it.What if there are some other reasons which force hospital to go for Novex like being cheap, getting special discounts. So i feel C.
Thanks,
Andy

I don't understand.
What we are talking about is Novax used in hospitals, not in pharmacies.
Somebody please explain.

Ok I did a search and it looks like this post provides a good explanation.
