For sinus pain, three out of four hospitals give their
patients Novex. So when you want the most effective
painkiller for sinus pain, Novex is the one to choose.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously
(A) Some competing brands of painkillers are
intended to reduce other kinds of pain in
(B) Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex
will do so for those patients who cannot
tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use.
(C) Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their
products to hospitals by selling these products
to the hospitals at the lowest price the manu-
facturers can afford.
(D) Unlike some competing brands of painkillers,
Novex is available from pharmacies without a
doctor’s prescription.
(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more
effective than competing brands of painkillers
that have been on the market longer than
Novex.

Not very confident but it I think B.

Premise: 3/4 hospitals gave patients Novex.
Conclusion: When you want an eff. pain killer Noves should be used.

B. Undermines the conclusion by stating that Novex is used only as an exception. Hence it may be possible that the hospitals that used Novex did so because the normal drug that the hospitals used was intelorable.

Incorrect choices:
(A) Out of Scope - OOS - since the discussion is only about the sinus.
(C) OOS - Profit/loss etc., are not the concern here.
(D) OOS - Avalibility of the drug is not concerned with this argument.
(E) It infact strengthens the argument.

It should be C. Since C points out another reason why hospitals use Novex more than other brands (not its effectiveness).

It should be C

Its not the effectiveness of the medication but the price....

I would go with D..
May be hospitals prefer this becoz they dnt need to give a prescription to their patients.. So to increase the patient numbers they r just going with Novex as thts the only drug available without prescription.

OA is D. Believe it or not.

My own answer was between B and C. I guess not! Unfortunately, I don't have OE for this. I also find andy's explanation a bit reasonable, except for the part that there's no way in the world we can assume that Novex is the only drug availabe in the market without prescription. My reasoning is that doctors are simply reluctant to bear a responsibility for the prescription drug's side effects.

I have seen this one many times. The OA is C. It is CR #10 from the OG 11th edition.

OE: The argument for Novex's effectiveness as a painkiller is based upon the hospitals' usage. Consider what might be driving the hospitals' choice of medications to administer. Three out of four hospitals might be giving their patients Novex not because it is the most effective painkiller for sinus pain, but because it is inexpensive. If this is the case, the argument is seriously undermined.

Where did you get your OA from?

D it is.

For sinus pain, three out of four hospitals give their patients Novex.

Why doctors do that?

I thought of following about :

1. Are doctors paid by the manufacturer?
2. Are the doctors in question of a particular region?
3. Is Novex cheaper?
4. Is Novex easily available?

I found the 4th one in the answer choices.

I have used that site before and the problems from that site.. and I felt many times their answers were not right...

I always wanted to know where did the site get the problems from and more where were the answers from? I solved a few problems from there and found some of the answers that did not match up with my PS answers, and I was sure mine was right...

I remember solving this from some other inferior prep material and C was not the OA? I still remember choosing C and that was ages back.
