Advice Needed: Retake the GMAT? [#permalink] New post 28 Jul 2008, 12:24
I recently took the GMAT and scored a 700. Q42 / V42. Although the verbal is high (95th percentile), the 42 quant score was very disappointing at around the 65th percentile. Is this quant score low enough to keep me out of top 10 programs? Do I need to retake the GMAT?

Candidate Profile:
- 3.5 GPA undergrad (BA, English)
- 3.7 GPA grad school (MA, International Affairs)
- 2 years work experience in government consulting (national security, foreign acquisition, intelligence analysis)

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated; Thanks!

The input I have received from grads from Kellogg and Wharton, regarding my own scores (710 Q41, V46) is that once you hit the 700 level, your GMAT score neither helps nor hurts you. I got a 680 the first time with a Q39, but hope to be able to support my relatively weaker quant scores with a strong finance background and letters of recommendation addressing my analytical and problem solving skills.

I think a score of 700 should be adequate in that it shouldn't draw too much attention one way or another, from what I've heard, but it may be worth some extra attention in your apps.

I would retake only to get the quant score up...you need to get much closer to 80% for the top ten.

Just curious, where you have heard this from? Like I said in my post, my experience with some friends in top tier programs gave very different advice.

Hmm...700 should be OK. I wouldn't retake it unless you really felt confident about increasing your Q.

If you feel you have a fighting chance of getting 750+, go ahead and do it. Otherwise, don't bother. Anything less is not gonna change your odds of getting in.
