Advice on Verbal Score Improvement - 14 days to go [#permalink] New post 28 Mar 2010, 15:36
Hello Everyone,

My GMAT is lined up in 14 days. I have practised numerous MGMAT CAT's and GMAT Prep 1. I am quite confident about my Quant Skills - though the MGMAT scores me at 48-49, the GMATPrep scored me at 50. However I am worried about the verbal - I am getting around 35 every time. When I practice the OG's or any other set of problems I can usually get 8 or 9 correct out of 10 (and this includes harder ones). However during the CAT's I think I mismanage my time or dont go through all the options and I am not getting good scores in the Verbal section. When I look at the solutions I can quickly spot my errors and many times it comes down to making a choice between the two choices I think are closest and almost always I choose the wrong one. I need to get a 730+ to be in a comfortable position to get into schools of my choice and I need a 38 on the verbal at least. Any quick resolution I can use to get over this bump?

Thanks in advance.

what part of the verbal section (cr, sc, rc) do you need to improve your accuracy or timing on the most? figure that out and then focus on only that section until your accuracy/timing improves. just drill problem after problem.

^he's right, verbal can be quite different beast on each section, although ability to read quickly and clearly will help. i can only suggest doing mocks with only verbal, to see whether fatigue affects the clarity and focus. or perhaps going through idioms on MGMAT SC guide. even native speakers would benefit from that gem of a chapter. other stuff, depends on whether you have native ear to guide you. even then knowing minute, subtle differences will help you answer marginally difficult questions just above your level. perhaps go through your notes, maybe reading something second time after few weeks will reinforce and strengthen your memory

remember that quite often most SC correction problems are wrong for more than one reason.

i don't know if this will help, use scratch paper to cross out stuff you know for sure is wrong, and also mark stuff that's probably wrong. use an x or something for definitely wrong, and one slash or something different for possibly wrong. will save you time from wasting time and also will focus your attention on where the answer is likely to be.
