(A) and (E) correctly introduce the subordinate clause, which refers to 'a group of scientists'. 'what the types ... were present' is awkward. (A) is the best answer! cheers

eliminate D& E based on 'what types'

'C' is awkwardly constructed, 'algae that are present' throws off B...

...left with A.
