Say Clayton originally had $$x$$ bars. He ate half, thus he was left with $$\frac{x}{2}$$ bars. Then, he gave $$\frac{x}{8}$$ bars (one fourth of the remaining) to his friend.

Given that $$\frac{x}{2}-\frac{x}{8}=6$$ --> $$x=16$$.

Hope it's clear.
