(C) becomes the dominant language of the Egyptians and it replaced older languages
(D) becomes the dominant language of the Egyptians and it replaced languages that were older
(E) becomes the dominant language of the Egyptians, having replaced languages that were older
Hi folks, I am more interested in the wrong answers. It would be great if we can discuss why some choice is wrong. Thanks

If I know what the correct answer is, I can probably explain why the other answers are wrong.
I think A is correct. What do you say?

This SC is tricky if think on it too much - and I see subtle changes in the meaning or intent of the sentence. Few points on my final thoughts though..
1. b/w 'becomes' and 'became' - choose 'became' as the event is in the past. 'became' is past tense of 'become' - just decided to think simply.
2. with that, b/w A and B - B was wordier and conveyed the same meaning as A.
3. So, I am choosing A.

Use of replacing in A is correct ... It correctly modifies ARABIC
(B) became the dominant language of the Egyptians, replacing languages that were older
The latter part (in red) is clearly unidiomatic
(C) becomes the dominant language of the Egyptians and it replaced older languages
A is preffered to this one. A means it became a dominant lang. and parrallely replaced older langs. Hwoever, in C it seems like it first became a doninent lang and (after that) it replaced other langs. Subtle shift of meaning
(D) becomes the dominant language of the Egyptians and it replaced languages that were older
tense problem
(E) becomes the dominant language of the Egyptians, having replaced languages that were older

MY pick will be A as well.
1. Choose Became over Becomes (Becomes is awkward and sounds progressive here.)
2. B/w A and B -> replacing older languages and writing systems is preferable to replacing languages that were older and writing system.
3. Improper use (and incorrect referent) of "it" in C & D.
4. In E, having replaced languages that were older and writing systems is vague, awkward and unidiomatic.

A is agrred clearely,
why
C, D & E uses becomes, which does not tell that it happened.
A) became the dominant language of the Egyptians, replacing older languages
(B) became the dominant language of the Egyptians, replacing languages that were older
- this sounds like Arabic replaced all the languages in addition to Egyptian language, which is not true
