well the choice is clearly between A and E. I go for E here, although I dont know the exact difference between "completing" and " finishing" work.

A) having finished a hard day's work, sleep descended on her

B) having finished a hard day's work, she felt sleep descend on her

C) sleep descended on her having finished a hard day's work

D) having finished a hard day's work, sleep had descended on her

E) having completed a hard day's work, sleep descended on her

I am confused.. I think A,B and E are all correct..
I don't see any difference between A and E. Finish can replace Complete.
B conveys different meaning..To stick to original meaning, I have to choose either A or E.

I choose E.

Ater u2lovergirl  lay down, having finished a hard day's work, sleep descended on her like a soft blanket.

A) having finished a hard day's work, sleep descended on her

B) having finished a hard day's work, she felt sleep descend on her
too wordy

C) sleep descended on her having finished a hard day's work
sleep did not finish a hard day's work

D) having finished a hard day's work, sleep had descended on her
past perfect not needed

E) having completed a hard day's work, sleep descended on her

it is A vs E. I am guess A. (boils down to the right idiom)

A

B is wrong because no body can feel how sleep descended after he/she has slept.
D is wrong because there is no need of past perfect tense.
C is wrong because it looks like sleep finished work.

Now fight is between A and E. I will fight for E if both A and E are conveying the same meaning.

Hope my reasoning is correct !!!!

U2Lovergirl finishes a hard day`s work and complete`s a difficult assignment.

This is a very odd SC because A and E are so similiar that they might be offsetting trap answers. They are also stated in the dreaded passive voice. Anyhow, B makes a strange comparison, C needs commas, and D uses the past perfect tense.

If not B then A.

OK, A.

I'm with B.

A) It looks like 'sleep' finished a hard days work. Modifier problem.
B) Modifier problem solved. $$$
C) Changes the meaning.
D) Incorrect usage of past perfect.
E) Same problem as A. Also, 'finishing some work' is preferable to 'completing some work' methinks.

I would go for A even if in this type of reasoning A and E looks the same and then I would pick something different

"like" certainly requires noun to compare to blanket.
Call is between A and E.

I would go with A.

sorry for delaying the OAs... ironically the power went off last night, so I was

ok... the award for this question goes to...

Futuristic, who was the first to notice it :good
Paddyboy, whose explanations rocked one by one
vivek123, of course... he is the GURU among us (not between  )
MA, who understood that going against the GURU would be wrong :)
and jeunesis, who wasn't sure if B was correct, but picked it anyways... good gut feeling!!!

BRAVO everyone... this was FUN :-D

OA is B indeed

for some reason I didn't think it was b/w A and E like many of you answered... I thought the battle was b/w B and D, chose D at the end :(

OE:
As in other participial phrases, the subject of the phrase finished must be the subject of the verb in the main clause. This problem is corrected by (B) Otherwise it sounds as if 'sleep' had just finished a hard day's work.

Nothing like that folks, always challenge the solution if you are not convinced, it doesn't matter what others think of you :)
