Hi Linda,
I plan to apply to Top 5 schools later this year. I will have about 8 years of work experience by then. I also have a Masters degree in Engineering.
I understand that I will need a convincing answer for Why MBA and Why Now questions and I have one. (Presuming that majority of the applicants are going to have lesser work experience).
My question is, How much is my undergrad (engineering) degree and/or starting work experience going to impact my application. In other words, how much focus will be on the early part of my career/education?
Thanks a Lot.
You're welcome. IN general, considering the distance between you today and those experiences from years ago, they will have less impact than if you were younger. Still some of my answer depends on how different your undergrad experience and early work experience is from the norm. If it is typical and competitive to that of other applicants at top schools, then it will have little impact. Your more recent experience will be far more important. If you have a low GPA, you will need to explain it; a high GMAT and recent A's or professional accomplishment will go far to erase adcom concerns about your mature academic ability. If you stumbled initially professionally, but have been progressing rapidly in the last several years, then focus on your recent experiences and so will the adcoms.
Good luck!
