Aging is a property of all animals that reach a fixed size at maturity, and the variations in life spans among different species are far greater as that among individuals from the same species: a fruit fly is ancient at 40 days, a mouse at 3 years, a horse at 30, a man at 100, and some tortoises at 150.
(A) among different species are far greater as that among individuals from
(B) among different species are far greater than that among individuals from
(C) among different species are far greater than those among individuals of
(D) between different species are far more than that between individuals of
(E) between different species are greater by far than is that between individuals from

what are we comparing here and why is those right and that not right??

I think we are comparing "variations in life", a plural, thats why we use "those".

"among" is required for more than two things (different species).

So C fits best.

I would go with C.
A) among different species are far greater as that among individuals from
greater as is not the right idiom
(B) among different species are far greater than that among individuals from
that/which should be used to refer to an idea or an object..May be i am wrong
(C) among different species are far greater than those among individuals of
CORRECT, with individuals or living beings "those" should be used
(D) between different species are far more than that between individuals of
many species are being compared, so use "among" not "between"
(E) between different species are greater by far than is that between individuals from
use "among"

ps_dahiya has stolen words from my mouth :)

After looking at the question I opted for Option C.
Use of 'Among' was obvious but use of 'those' was little unclear.
And then I arrived at the same reasoning as given by ps_dahiya.

I think we are comparing "variations in life", a plural, thats why we use "those".

When we have two options we pick one between the two, say, Between apples and oranges I pick apple.

When we have more than two options we choose one among them- Among all the fruits I like apples.

Variations in life-span among different species is what we’re comparing.
