(B) Festivals were held in Aho, a Kiowa matriarch’s home, which featured

(D) In her home, Aho, a Kiowa matriarch, held festivals that featured
(E) Aho, a Kiowa matriarch, held festivals in her home that featured

why it is d?

(A) Fragmented sentences. " her home, they feature" should be "her home ; they feature"
(B) Passive should be avoided in most cases
(C) misplaced modifiers " in her home". In this case we think that "in her home" modifies "who was a Kiowa matriarch", not the place of festivals.
(D) correct
(E) "that" modifies "home" or modifies "festivals"? Ambiguous

it's a matter of recognizing the difference between 'home that featured' and 'festivals that featured'

the moment i recognized featured is for festivals. i chose D :)

A is a runon sentence.

D and E are contenders.. However, E changes the meaning by modifying the house instead of the festivals.

D is the answer.

you see THAT does not modify researches but METHODS!
in my example METHODS is part of prepositional phrase and is being ( sorry :D) modified by THAT.

I say FESTIVALS is not a part of prepositional phrase since it can be easily separated from the phrase. IN HER ROOM is adverbial phrase but that's not true about my own example...

hope that helps, sorry if it doesnt :D

ok thanks, I see your point.

held festivals in her home that featured

"in her home" can also be an adverbial prep phrase modifying "held". but it could also modify "festivals". That modifiers never jump the adverbial phrases. since it's ambiguous it might be safe to go with D. in either case, is this even an official problem?

A- They refers Festivals in the sentence which is incorrect. Sentence after comma lacks a conjunction. Eliminate
B- Aho is not Kiowa matriach’s home. Wrong. Eliminate
C- Seems to tell that Aho is only matriarch only in her home. Changes meaning. Eliminate
D- Keep
E- Home doesn’t have all the adjectival phrases that follow. Eliminate

I choose answer choice E, however the correct answer is D. Can anyone explain?

Hi there,

e-gmat team wishes you all a very Happy New Year.

Aho, a Kiowa matriarch, held festivals in her home, they featured the preparation of great quantities of ceremonial food, the wearing of many layers of colorful clothing adorned with silver, and the recounting of traditional tribal jokes and stories.

It is rather easy to eliminate choices A, B, and C. So let’s analyze the two close answer choices:

(D) In her home, Aho, a Kiowa matriarch, held festivals that featured: Correct. Relative pronoun “that” correctly refers to the preceding noun entity “festivals”.

(E) Aho, a Kiowa matriarch, held festivals in her home that featured: Incorrect. Here “that” refers to “home”. Well, a noun modifier can certainly refer to the slightly far away noun that is the head of the preceding noun phrase of the noun modifier. However, in this case “that” cannot jump over “in her home” to refer to “festivals” because “in her home modifies” the verb “held” and not the noun “festivals”. This is the reason why it can be placed somewhere else in the sentence as seen in the correct choice and thus “that” cannot jump over this prepositional phrase to refer to the far away noun “festivals”.

To know in details when Noun Modifiers can refer to the far away nouns and when they cannot, claick on the following link to read the detailed article:
noun-modifiers-can-modify-slightly-far-away-noun-135868.html

Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Re: SC - Festivals [#permalink] New post 13 Sep 2005, 17:13
It's not E because if you parse the sentence, "held festivals in her home that featured.....that the wearing of many layers..." doesn't make sense. If you add "that" then that will carry over to the subsequent parts of the sentence. Sorry, I do not know the correct terminology.

I'd say D is the answer.

(A) Aho, a Kiowa matriarch, held festivals in her home, they featured
- Unclear because not sure what "they" refers to

(B) Festivals were held in Aho, a Kiowa matriarch’s home, which featured
- Wrong because Aho is a Kiowa matriarch, not a home

(C) Aho, who was a Kiowa matriarch in her home, held festivals featuring
- Changes the meaning of the sentence

(E) Aho, a Kiowa matriarch, held festivals in her home that featured
- See explanation above

Hey trulyblessed,

I didnt quite get the reasoning.

E structure means - held festivals..that featured A (the preparation of great quantities of ceremonial food), B(the wearing of many layers of colorful clothing adorned with silver) and C(the recounting of traditional tribal jokes and stories)

D structure also means the same - held festivals that featured A, B and C.

"held festivals in her home that featured.....that the wearing of many layers..." where do we use this?

Thanks for your explanation!

I would go for D as in E it seems "HOME is MODIFIED"
D is more clearer as " festivals that....."

Even I was tempted to go for E.
Looking it more closely, E seems to hint that the home featured "the preparation of great quantities of ceremonial food, the wearing of many layers of colorful clothing adorned with silver, and the recounting of traditional tribal jokes and stories"
and not the festival.

OA is D....but I like E better
Any reason why E is not the best choice? it seems to be the most concise

E.Aho, a Kiowa matriarch, held festivals in her home that featured ---- her home is being modified.

D.In her home, Aho, a Kiowa matriarch, held festivals that featured --- here festivals modified

D is fine. like you, I was voting for E before rereading D
