Re: Aided by the boost it received from being launched near the [#permalink]
haah... i didn't guess this one, though i used to belive in intuition earlier.... :P

Here's the explanation :

(A) where the surface velocity of the earth is greater than at other latitudes
(B) where the surface velocity is greater for the earth than other latitudes are
(C) where the earth’s surface has a greater velocity than other latitudes have it seems earth's surface and latitudes are being compared...
(D) with the earth’s surface velocity greater there than at other latitudes
(E) the surface velocity of earth being greater there than other latitudes

Actually I wanted to see whether anyone spot one aspect of this sentence.
It should be any other latitude and the word other is missing from all the options

That is exactly the reason, we are expected to come up with the best possible answer among the given options. Most often than not, the correct answer to the question isn't even available among the options given.

Frequently I'm confused by the comparison SC s.
Here we like to compare the surface velocity of the equator to that of other latitude.
Now I failed to understand how A compares perfectly?

Aided by the boost it received from being launched near the equator, where the surface velocity of the earth is greater than at other latitudes, the French rocket Ariane carried a communications satellite nearly 25,000 miles into space.

(A) where the surface velocity of the earth is greater than at other latitudes
(B) where the surface velocity is greater for the earth than other latitudes are
(C) where the earth’s surface has a greater velocity than other latitudes have
(D) with the earth’s surface velocity greater there than at other latitudes
(E) the surface velocity of earth being greater there than other latitudes

We are left with A and E as we need 'at' for comparison to be correct ..... comaparing 'at equator' and 'at other latitudes'

other options compare the surface velocity of the equator to that of other latitude

Now out of A and E ---- equator is a place. Hence, 'where' is correct and in addition to that i feel 'the surface velocity of the earth' is better than 'earth’s surface velocity'.

I'm not convinced. The correct sentence seems to compare the surface velocity of equator with other latitude.
Instead it should compare the surface velocity of equator with the surface velocity of other latitude

None of the answer choices are correct
and angel2009 your reasoning is correct, we need to compare the surface velocity of equator with the surface velocity of other latitude

The surface velocity of the earth at equator is greater than at other latitudes

is the comparison correct here ?

if yes then A also states the same it compares speed @equator & @other latitudes

IMO C. What's the OA? Can't google it now.

I think "that of" is missing in A?

we should have "where" to compare the equator with other places in earth. So eliminating D and E
In C we are comparing earth's surface with other latitudes.
In B the comparison is wrong .
Now if we take A, "near equator....at other latitudes" here we are comparing two places .. it is similar to "surface velocity of earth is greater at equator than at other latitudes."
so A is perfect.

whats the OA

Re: Aided by the boost it received from being launched near the [#permalink]
where' refers to a location near the equator; eliminate D and E

eliminate B because it sounds like ur comparing earth to other latitudes

eliminate C because it sounds like ur talking about earth's surface instead of the equator

Answer is A; also 'at other latitudes' speaks to a specific point instead of just plainly saying 'other'
