E. Unlike Aero Honduran, Air Alpha has recently implemented a plan to provide insurance to travellers who get injured during an accident.

Hi ConnectTheDots

Thanks for your detailed response! :)

However, E is not the correct answer.

It's a very tempting choice but according to E, Air Alpha has recently implemented a plan; however, people have preferred Alpha over Aero Honduran for their flights from Miami to Honduras over the past few years.

Insurance benefit may make people to opt for Air Alpha now but it doesn't explain people's preference in the past.

Also, Aero Honduran is cheaper than Air Alpha. Please check this point in option B also.

OA is D. Would you like to give it a once over?

Thanks!

It's somewhat like 'resolve the paradox' type of question.

Air Alpha had greater number of accidents. However, still travellers prefer Air Alpha for their flights from Miami to Honduras.

and Option D gives the best explanation to resolve this paradox.

The reason that E didn't seem right to me is not that the issue is past vs present.
Even if they have insurance, would you want to get into an accident if you have insurance? NO!
You would like not to get into it in the first place.
Don't you think?

Hey ..there is no winner amongst C & D..A different model of plane does give a potential reason for the preference...And D also just explains one aspect & not the why is Air alpha preferred even though it is more expensive...
In short..Not a very good question according to me analysis

As far as i can see it, it's choosing price vs safety...
D gives a reason that helps determine that the airline isn't less safe everywhere, just on that particular runway.
If you take flights not using that one, than maybe it's not more dangerous, or even safer than the other...

Over the past few years.
AIR Alpha | AERO Honduran
Expensive | Cheaper
Dangerous | Safer

Paradox : people preferred AIR even though it is dangerous and expensive compared to AERO.

What can resolve paradox, anything which can provide information that AERO is not good and ALPHA is better on Miami route.

Option D does not resolve the paradox. It just tell us that one air port is dangerous and air alpha dont fly from that airport to Miami, but paradox is why people do not opt AERO tough it is affordable and safe. If option D had added that AERO flies from Toncon airport then argument could have resolved the paradox.

Whats the source of this question?

And option D tells that most of the accidents happen because of the faulty runway...
So the cause of the accident is runway not any unsecure measures followed by the flight..

That is one aspect, but why one should not take AERO though it is cheaper and safer. Does option D answer this paradox completely.

I too feel that D is not the correct answer. E provides a positive comparison between the policies of two companies. Can you pls comment on the source of the question.

Responding to a pm:

None of the options are correct, in my opinion. Neither (D) nor (E) helps resolve the paradox.

Air Alpha is more expensive and has had more accidents. Still people prefer it over Aero Honduran. Why?
The reason has to be something about Air Alpha that works in its favor (awesome service/many flights/suitable flight timings/on time record etc) or there has to be something about Aero Honduran that people don't like.

D. Most Air Alpha flights, but not its flight from Miami to Honduras, use the Toncon airport, which because of its difficult runway is amongst the most dangerous airports.
This tells you that Air Alpha uses a dangerous airport but it doesn't tell you whether the Air Alpha accidents that happened, actually happened at the airport. Also, if they actually did happen at the airport, then Air Alpha Miami to Honduras flight may not be more dangerous than Aero Honduran flight. But there is still no reason why people may prefer it over Aero Honduran which is cheaper and safer. If anything, from the given information, people should actually prefer Aero Honduran.

E. Unlike Aero Honduran, Air Alpha has recently implemented a plan to provide insurance to travellers who get injured during an accident.
This is out of scope. We are talking about the last few years and Air Alpha has recently implemented this plan. So no need to discuss it at all.

Karishma your analysis of option D was awesome...+1 for that

This is out of scope. We are talking about the last few years and Air Alpha has recently implemented this plan. So no need to discuss it at all.

If we've boiled it down to choices D and E ... D is the correct answer.

The argument is looking to resolve the paradox to why customers prefer Air Alpha over Aero Honduran for their flights from Miami to Honduras.

Choice E, I agree -- is Out of Scope. It gives us no reason whatsoever to think that Air Alpha is a safer company to fly with than Aero Honduran. It just says that AA has tacked on some insurance package on top of their "highly dangerous" flights.

Choice D, gives us a reason to believe that all those high accidents could have occurred at the "ever-so" unreliable Toncon Airport. And, given all the choices in this problem, this answer is the only one that tries to rectify the big problem with Air Alpha: It's high rate of accidents.

And, as with most of these CR problems, we've always got to pick the best answer, not the answer that'd make the most sense in the real world.

Re: Air Alpha has had significantly greater number of accidents [#permalink]
This is a very good question. Here's how I solved it: I placed myself in the traveler's shoe to solve this question.

A. Although the number of accidents is greater on Air Alpha, not all accidents cause serious injuries to travellers.
- As a traveler, I would not be comfortable traveling with an airline that continues to be in the news for frequent accidents. Besides, it could still be true that the accident that I as a traveler may be a part of could still be that exceptional case that causes significant injuries. So, (A) would not help explain why I (or any other traveler) would choose Air Alpha, despite it's poor accident record.
B. People have become highly sensitive to the cost of flying over the past few years. - this does not explicitly tell us whether 'cost sensitive' literally translates to 'favoring cheaper tickets'. One could reasonably argue that the travelers now prefer a more expensive ticket offered by Air Alpha.
C. For its flights from Miami to Honduras, the Air Alpha uses a different model of airplane, with a smaller capacity, than the model Aero Honduran uses for its flight on the same route. - If anything, I as a traveler would want a more spacious aircraft. (C) does not tell us why passengers still preferred Air Alpha over the other airline company.
D. Most Air Alpha flights, but not its flight from Miami to Honduras, use the Toncon airport, which because of its difficult runway is amongst the most dangerous airports. - (D) could probably explain why Air Alpha experiences high number of accidents - the fact that it uses a very difficult Airport known for a notoriously dangerous runway. The Miami to Honduras flight operated by Air Alpha does not use the dangerous Toncon Airport. This is probably the only comforting factor that encourages travelers to continue traveling on Air Alpha. Hence, (D) is the right answer choice.
E. Unlike Aero Honduran, Air Alpha has recently implemented a plan to provide insurance to travellers who get injured during an accident. - the provision of insurance coverage alone will not entice travelers to continue traveling on Air Alpha because it still does not eliminate the fear the travelers may have over flying with Air Alpha, given the firm's poor accident records.
