i disagree that everyone can get a high gmat score if they worked hard enough. I know many people who worked hard enough but couldnt raise their scores to more than a 550. I help a lot of people with their GMAT preparations and just last week one person got a 550 after 3 months of good prep. I believe that if you have a 700+ gmat score, it means that generally you are intellectually gifted and you also work hard. I believe that if you are only intellectually gifted and dont work hard then you will generally not get a 700+. On the other hand if you only work hard and you dont have that brain that is a little special than the rest then you will generally not get that 700+ score. I believe this is the beauty of the GMAT and I believe this is exactly why most schools use it.
I agree and disagree to some extent. Most people who are capable business 'executives' (i.e. have the potential to work in an executive capacity) will be able to get a GMAT 700+. Some will take longer than others. With learning, there are multiple techniques and styles. This is the key in learning, finding a technique and system which harnesses your learning capacity (part of the reason for finding FIT in b-school). Some people are excellent and learning by themselves, other people need coaching. Rote learning is good for other, visual learning and even auditory learning is effective for others. Then there is motivating factors.. Some people need encouragement, whereas other perform much better when pushed or stressed.
*Obviously you can take my opinion in whatever form you want as i only scored 610 after 2-3 weeks of studying here and there in between looking after my kids and putting extra time into a product that was publically launched (globally) on the day of my exam.
* (My excuse for the 610
