All orchid species that are pollinated solely by insects [#permalink] New post 28 Dec 2005, 13:44
All orchid species that are pollinated solely by insects have features that attract insects. The flower of a recently discovered orchid species contains edible tendrills that invariably attract insects to the inside of the flower. Hence, it folows that this orchid species is one that is pollinated solely by insects.

The argument is flawed because it

A. makes an unwarranted assumption that a characteristic that is shared by two classes of things is their only common feature.

B. assumes without warrant that a characteristic distinguishes one class of thinns from another is the only characteristic charcteristic that distinguishes that class from the other

C. mistakes a charactristic that is unique to one particular class of things for a characteristic that is unique to an unrelated class of things

D. Treats a characteristic known to be true of one class of things as if that characteristic were unique to that class

E. makes broad generalizations about all members of a particular class of things on the basis of what is known about a member of an unrelated class of things

Class of things = Orchids pollinated only by insects
Characteristic = Feature to attract insects.

D assumes that the feature is unique only to that class. The feature could be true to other classes such as orchids that are pollinated by both insects and birds.

I will go with D.

Generalization about all orchids can not be done on the basis of just one class of things (Orchids pollinated by species)
