All the clients that Company X had at the beginning of last year remained with the company for the whole year. If Company X acquired new clients during the year, what was the ratio of the number of clients that Company X had at the end of last year to the number of clients that it had at the beginning of last year?

(1) The ratio of the number of clients that Company X had at the beginning of last year to the number of new clients that it acquired during the year was 12 to 1.

(2) Company X had 144 clients at the beginning of last year.

OA is A...but i chose E because we dont know whether the new clients hired remained till the end of the year...we only know that the clients at the begining of the year remained till the end of last year... so according to me we need to know whether the new clients also remained with Company X at the end of last year...statement 1 does not give us this information. I know GMATPREP can NEVER be wrong, but i think i have a point here.. :|

Thanks in advance.
[Reveal] Spoiler: OA

Yes, it seems that you have a point here. Though since the OA is A then the question implies that all new clients remained with the company till the end of last year.

In this case the answer is easy A: question asks the value of (x+y)/x=1+y/x, where x is # of clients at the beginning of last year and y is # of new clients. (1) states that that x/y=12, which is sufficient to get the desired ratio.

Answer: A.

P.S. Actually there are some flawed GMAT Prep questions, so it's not true that GMAT Prep problems are never wrong.

Thanks Bunuel.. Im glad you agree with me... Sad to know that GMATPREP questions can sometimes we flawed..will keep this in mind.

And yes, if we assume that the new clients too remained with the company then its straight A. No confusion there.

Thanks again for your help. :)
