Alonso : the introduction of a new drug into the marketplace should be contingent upon our having a good understanding of its social impact. However, the social impact of the newly marketed antihistamine is far from clear. It is obvious, then, that there should be a general reduction in the pace of bringing to the marketplace new drugs that are now being created.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?

The social impact of the new antihistamine is much better understood than that of the most new drugs being tested.

The social impact of some of the new drugs being tested is poorly understood.

The economic success of some drugs is inversely proportional to how well we understand their social impact.

The new antihistamine is chemically similar to some of the new drugs being tested.

The new antihistamine should be next on the market only if most new drugs being tested should be on the market also..

Please provide feedback.

Thanks

Conclusion: Pace of new drugs brought to market should be slowed. In the argument there is a gap - the conclusion is based on the premise that the "social impact of the newly marketed antihistamine is far from clear"

A. Weakens the argument

B. Sounds Plausible, however it is not attacking the conclusion and does not talk about antihistamines

C.Not attacking the conclusion and does not talk about antihistamines

D. If the new atihistamine is not well understood and is similar to the new drug being tested, then it implies that the new drugs being tested are not well understood either. Thus the answer.

E. New antihistamine is already on the market also what is the gurantee that the new drugs will be well understood before introduction into the marketplace.

A for me too.

The social impact of the new antihistamine is much better understood than that of the most new drugs being tested.

In spite of much better understood social impact the new antihistamine has vague social impact thus the other new drugs[whose social impact is less understood than the new anti..] need to wait for a clear social impact

A for me..just the fact that the new antihistamine is in the market means that the effects of it are better understood than some of the other new drugs that might come into the market

A: The drugs are in the testing stage where as the one we are talking about is in the marketing stage..we cannot compare drugs at these two stages as a study on social impact might be due after the testing stage..
B is the better one I think

Well, choice B is very tempting and if "some" was replaced by "most" in that choice, then that would have been correct choice.
But notice that in argument we don't talk about "some" new drugs, we talk about new drugs. So B does not fills the gap.

Choice A gives a point that we have a better understanding of Antihistamine than most new drugs, and therefore if social impact of antihistamine is far from clear the social impact of new drugs will be even unclear.
So choice A is CORRECT.

Choice C is clearly out of scope.
Choice D talks about chemical nature of new drugs, not social impact.
Choice E says, if only new drugs are in market, Antihistamine drug should be in market. So this rather counter the argument, where the author is trying to show causality as,
anti-histamine in market --> new drugs in market otherwise not.
