Although films about the American West depict coyotes as solitary animals howling mournfully on the tops of distant hills, in reality these gregarious creatures live in stable groups that occupy the same territory for long periods.

A. films about the American West depict coyotes as solitary animals howling mournfully on the tops of distant hills
C. coyotes are depicted as solitary animals howling mournfully on the tops of distant hills in films about the American West

The correct answer is A. However, I think C is better because "coyotes" is consistent with "creatures", the subject of the second sentence. Can somebody explain it to me? Thanks:)

In A, we don't make it clear who is "howling mournfully on the tops of distant hill". Is it the films or coyotes?

So I will also go for C.

It is the "solitary animals" that are clearly being modified. A is fine.

C is good because in A.. non underlined portion of sentence have "these" and antecedent for it is not clear.

In C , these refers to coyotes as films is under prepostional pharase which cannot be the subject for non underlined sentence.

Thats my take on the question
