You need the parellalism between resprire and breathe. So B,C,D can be eliminated.
Between A and E, E seems correct to me because
it continues to respire ... just as human beings do [respire] when they breathe
versus
it continues to respire ... similar to the way human beings breathe

My opinion... (B) similarly to human beings who are breathing [need breathe to match respire](C) just like the breathing of human beings [need breathe to match respire](D) as human beings when breathing [need breathe to match respire](E) just as human beings do when they breathe ["just as" is different than "similar to" because "just as" suggests equality, instead of similarity](A) similar to the way human beings breathe [ breathe matches and similar suggests something like we have lungs they don't, but process is almost the same][A] anyone have the OA?

The key to comparison questions is to think about what exactly is compared. In my opinion, over here, I feel fruits 'respire' is compared to 'breathing' of humans. So anything that puts human as a subject can be eliminated - B,D,E gone. Between A and C, I'd pick A because 'just like' should compare totally dissimilar things. (A) similar to the way human beings breathe (B) similarly to human beings who are breathing (C) just like the breathing of human beings -> improper comparison (D) as human beings when breathing-> awkward, changes the meaning (E) just as human beings do when they breathe-> || with what the fruit does during its respiration Look at what is being compared with what? The fruit's respiration is being compared to human beings respiration thus E is the correct one. Hope this helps

Hmmm back to the drawing board then for comparisons. Maybe just as = comparison of clauses which makes parallelism more important than the subject - is this correct ?

pls see my previous post, OA is E, source is from SC1000. I just wonder the use of 'similar to' (look alike but not the same) and 'just as' (same). Maybe the ways they breathe (do) are the same
