Although fullerenes- spherical molecule made entirely of carbon- were first found in the laboratory , they have since been found in nature, formed in fissures of the rare mineral shungite. since lab synthesis of fullerenes requires distinctive conditions of temperature and pressure, this discovery should give geologists a test case for evaluating hypotheses about the state of the Earth's crust at the time these naturally occurring fullerenes were formed.

which of the following most undermines the argument?

1. confirming that the shungite generally contained fullerenes took careful experimentation

D is the best choice.

If the later discovered naturally occuring 'Fullerenes' have an unknown crystalline structure compared to the lab made one, they cannot be treated as being equivalent. So, it is less useful in evaluating the hypothesis about earth's crust.

D is the best choice. D says the fullerens are arranged in a crystalline structure while those in the lab were formed entirely from carbon, they cannot be be compared equivalently.

If the sunghite is formed only under distinctive conditions (different from those of the lab and therefore different from the Earth's crust).
