66. Although ice particles in the upper atmosphere benefit Earth in that they reflect and absorb solar radiation, acting as global thermostat and thus keeping Earth from either burning up or freezing over, they also accelerate the destruction of the ozone layer by reacting with chloroflurocarbons (CFC's).
A) acting as global thermostat and thus keeping Earth from either burning up or freezing over, they also accelerate
B)acting as a global thermostat and thus keeping Earth either from burning up or freezing over, while also accelerating
C)act as a global thermostat and thus keep Earth from either burning up or freezing over, while also accelerating
D)they act as a global thermostat that thus keeps the Earth either from burning up or freezing over, even though it also accelerates
E)they act as a global thermostat to thus keep Earth from either burning up or freezing over, but they also accelerate
Can somebody please explain the sentence structure and why certain answer choices are wrong? Thanks.

Although...they also....
C is flawed after "while also accelerating" isnt correct
Should be A

So you mean if instead of "while also accelerating" ...it was something like
"they also accelerate " then C would have been the correct choice?

The OA is A. I had a question whether the omittance of "a" -> acting as global thermostat vs acting as a global thermostat has any relevance. Also, is "Although....they also" usually the proper form? In other words, is a sentence not gramatically correct if "while" follows "although"? Thanks.

i chose A because it seemed like the lesser of 5 evils.
B: either / or must be parallel, so it should be either FROM burning up or FROM freezing over
C: the verb act is wrong
D: again either / or. "that thus" sounds stupid
E: "to thus" again sounds akward.
I am not 100% comfortable with the parenthetical clause 'acting as...freezing over' generally you look to the closest noun as a referent; which in this case is radiation. it is clear that they intended for ice particles to be the referent... so I think there is still a clarity issue.

To me A is a perfectly sensible choice.

#1. Orange part is a dependent clause
#2.Green part is modifying the subject of the main clause - i.e. "they"
#3. You cannot have "a" before "global thermostat", since "global thermostat" is referring to "they" ("they itself is referring to "ice particles")

I'll go for C. It maintains parallelism. D and E are very awkward.

The participle starting with acting modifies ice particles in the Although clause and the clause after 'they' is the main clause.

A) acting as global thermostat and thus keeping Earth from either burning up or freezing over, they also accelerate - Correct B)acting as a global thermostat and thus keeping Earth either from burning up or freezing over, while also accelerating C)act as a global thermostat and thus keep Earth from either burning up or freezing over, while also accelerating - Weird - who is accelerating?? D)they act as a global thermostat that thus keeps the Earth either from burning up or freezing over, even though it also accelerates E)they act as a global thermostat to thus keep Earth from either burning up or freezing over, but they also accelerate
Can somebody please explain the sentence structure and why certain answer choices are wrong? Thanks.
Reading the above comments also see that in choice c - act as a is not correct

acting - adjective clearly highlights the clause 'reflect and absorb solar radiation' as the reason for thermostat. It is more appropriate than other options available.
'they act' doesn't clearly emphasis the reasons for being thermostat, which I think is the point the original stem is trying to establish.
So 'A' is the clear winner here.

Can someone please explain why "acting" is needed and why we don't need "they". I'm still confused after reading all the explanations. The clause between comma's can refer, imo, both to ice particles and to radiation (although it may not be logically clear it is not grammatically incorrect) and thus the use of acting does not seem unambiguous to me. Your help is heavily appreciated!

A, Although ice particles ..., they also ... . while or while also or even though or but is incorrect for "although."

A – Keep B – Either X or Y is correct usage. Eliminate C – While is a conjunction. 2nd sentence misses a subject. Eliminate D – as B E – “themostat to thus keep” – ungrammatical. Eliminate
