Although improved efficiency in converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand by increasing supply and lowering prices, thereby boosting consumption. A. in converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand by increasing supply and lowering prices, thereby boosting. B. In converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, demand will be stimulated because of increasing supply and lowering prices, which boost. C. Of converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand by increasing supply and lowering prices, which boosts. D. Of harvested trees being converted into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand, because it will increase supply and lower prices, thereby boosting. E. When harvested trees are converted into wood products may reduce harvest rates, demand will be stimulated because of increasing supply and lowering prices, which boost.
Lets be specific - WHY IS A BETTER THAN B OR VICE-VERSA!

I'd say B is better than A. A has an "it" which is ambiguous.

"it" does not have a clear referent because I cant work out what "it" refers to What do you feel it refers to ? goalsnr wrote: bsd_lover wrote: I'd say B is better than A. I will go for A. I think "it" refers to improved efficiency.

I think "it" refers to "improved efficiency", too. Therefore, A is the answer.

B.
Reasoning, though "it" seems to refer to "efficiency", the answer is ambiguous as previously mentioned.
By you saying "it" must refer to "efficiency", is the same as saying that if in "b", "boosts" would be correct because it is referring to "demand."
Ultimately, I think its best when doing misplaced modifier questions to choose the answer that has the modifer closest to the word its modifying.

agree with goalsnr. In B, "increasing supply and lowering prices" boost consumption. In A, demand boosts consumption, which is right.

Lets be specific - WHY IS A BETTER THAN B OR VICE-VERSA! B is missing "will". Since we are talking about a scenario (use of "may" in the sentence"), "will" is needed. A is correct as is.

between A and B, A is a winner.
My explanation is that "it" signalls a red flag in the GMAT, but it doesn't mean that it is always wrong. I have been done by this in the gmatprep before.
so continuing with my explanation, the sentence is saying:
improved efficiency --> reduce harvest rates --> increase demand (by more supply and lower prices) --> therefore boosting consumption
note that all the effects (denoted by -->) are caused by the improved efficiency.
B changes the meaning by saying that the boosting consumption only happens by reduced prices
so A

ur explanation sounds good, but note that in B (In converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, demand will be stimulated because of increasing supply and lowering prices, which boost) not boosts, so u cant say that increased consumption is only due to lowering price. In fact there are more than 1 factors involved. And whts wrong in saying that both increasing supply and lowering prices boost consumption? buffdaddy wrote: between A and B, A is a winner.

This post received KUDOS
"prices, which boost"
here boost is actually needed to agree with the plural "prices", not because of "X and Y, which boost"
note that modifiers begining with "that" and ",which" modify the noun immediately before the that or which.
if you want to modify the whole phrase before u have to start the modifying phrase with a verb "ing" form.

B
A. in converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand by increasing supply and lowering prices, thereby boosting. 'it' is ambigious B. In converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, demand will be stimulated because of increasing supply and lowering prices, which boost. hold it C. Of converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand by increasing supply and lowering prices, which boosts. 'it' is ambigious D. Of harvested trees being converted into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand, because it will increase supply and lower prices, thereby boosting. 'it' is ambigious E. When harvested trees are converted into wood products may reduce harvest rates, demand will be stimulated because of increasing supply and lowering prices, which boost. when harvested is wrong
Can anyone comment on 'improved efficiency in' and 'improved efficiency of'

Although improved efficiency in converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand by increasing supply and lowering prices, thereby boosting consumption. A. in converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand by increasing supply and lowering prices, thereby boosting.even though "it" is used in the sentence, here it unambiguously refers to improved efficiency... B. In converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, demand will be stimulated because of increasing supply and lowering prices, which boost.this is awkward construct C. Of converting harvested trees into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand by increasing supply and lowering prices, which boosts.this is awkward construct
D. Of harvested trees being converted into wood products may reduce harvest rates, it will stimulate demand, because it will increase supply and lower prices, thereby boosting.this is awkward construct
E. When harvested trees are converted into wood products may reduce harvest rates, demand will be stimulated because of increasing supply and lowering prices, which boost.the first half is really awkward construct..it hits my ear when i say that to myself..
