To evensflow,
Quote:
Another thing that raises doubt in my mind is the use of "present perfect continous" tense in option "E". Here it suggests that India is among the seven countries, which have been launching satellites since a long time in past. .

I think in E, it's not present perfect con., but ordinary present perfect.

BTW a and e i feel that the meaning quite same. Moreover, if plug E in i see the parallelism.

To choose btw E and B, I must go for E.
Because of the parallelism like that I said at the beginning.

IMHO, the correct answer is A. Although it seems redundant to repeat the "amongs", they are necessary in this case for without them, the following phrases can be construed to modify "the ten most ... countries" because of the coincidence that there are seven and three in the next two groups. (i.e., it can be misinterpreted to think that we are only talking about 10 countries, 7 or which are one thing, and 3 of which are another). Also, A is the only one to properly use "that have launched their own satellites" as the verb tense. All of the others sound awkward.

Knowing that E is the answer, I am able to see the reasoning..

It still mantains parallelism and should be read as

India is AMONG the ten most industrialized nations, the seven countries that have been the only ones to launch their own earth satellites, and the three countries that have the largest pools of technically trained persons.

Add one more to the E pool. Even though a bit wordy, E sounds most logical.

I think it should be "E".

"A" is logically wrong. "E" is both grammatically & logically correct.

Although low in per capita income, India is among the ten most industrialized nations, among the only seven countries that have launched their own Earth satellites, and among the three countries that have the largest pools of technically trained persons.

First Grammar:

a) among the only seven countries that have launched their own Earth satellites, and among – looks ok.

b) the only seven countries to have launched their own Earth satellites, and : This has faulty parallelism. To have launched - an infinitive - and -that have the largest pool - a clause is not proper //

c) among the only seven countries to have launched their own Earth satellites, and : Using among for two factors and leaving it for the third is no good parallelism.

d) the seven countries that are the only ones that launched their own Earth satellites, and : launched, a past tense clause - and - -that have the largest pools- a clause with present perfect is not good parallelism.

e) the seven countries that have been the only ones to launch their own Earth satellites, and : that have been the only ones- a present perfect (meaning that they are not any more the only ones) and that have the largest pools- a present tense - is no good parallelism.

BY POE only A survives grammar norms.

Now Meaning: The question wants to list three factors in favor of India. All the three are independent of each other. The two later ones are not the modifiers of the first namely the 10 industrial nations.

For example, if you want to define industrial nations as those that have launched their own satellites and those that have the largest pools, then the numbers of seven and three are irrelevant then. If there are among the 10 industrialized nations, only three have largest pools, what happened to the other seven? Can we conclude that the other seven cannot be defined as industrialized? The paradox of this factor is that three of the Group of Eight countries, the highly industrialized countries of the world, namely Germany, Italy, and Canada have still not launched their own satellites, while Iran, not anywhere near a highly industrialized status, has its own satellite.
Therefore being industrialized and launching their own satellite and having the largest pools are not a package but are totally independent. This is the core of the question at hand and hence A, though wordy a bit, makes things clear.

Very nice question and kudo to the poster.

Hey the answer has been given as E. Can you please justify that?

Hi! If you look up the quote for this question choice. An NYT article pops up that uses the structure from answer choice A. The only difference is the choice of that over which in these choice which I do not believe is a grammatical or a meaning issue from this question.

This is the quote from the NYT article:
"The Government poster being circulated to Indian missions abroad carries the caption 'India among the nations of the world' and goes on to proclaim proudly that this country is 'among the 10 most industrialized nations, among the only seven countries which have launched their own earth satellites, and among the three countries which have the world's largest pools of technically trained manpower.'"
