"E"....singular subject...all other introduces plural pronuoun reference.

The answer should be E only.
It corresponds to army(Its addressed as a singular noun).
So we should have a singular verb only in the preceding part of the sentence. Eliminate A, B, C, D for plural(they/their).
E stinks least and its the best one.

Any one with "they" or "their" should be ruled out. This leaves (E).
