i am going with the option E here. "as" here used as preposition here. for example " as a child, i thought i could fly". so E wins

It is well known in the supermarket industry that how items are placed on shelves and the frequency of
inventory turnovers can be crucial to profits.

(A) the frequency of inventory turnovers can be
(B) the frequency of inventory turnovers is often
(C) the frequency with which the inventory turns over is often
(D) how frequently is the inventory turned over are often
(E) how frequently the inventory turns over can be

I wanted to understand that can we look at option D in a way in which we are making the PASSIVE are placed to the PASSIVE is turned .

In option E it is ACTIVE turns.

Also, if option D is : how frequently the inventory is turned over are often

Would that be correct?

In Option [E] turns is not active, an active voice [E] would read - how frequently the inventory is turned over can be

if option D is : how frequently the inventory is turned over are often is incorrect - replacing can in the stimulus with are here would change the meaning entirely....i guess, that is a risk a test taker should not take when a correct option [E] is already making a perfect answer sense.

Although she had signed a pledge of abstinence while being an adolescent, Frances Willard was 35 years old before she chose to become a temperance activist.
(A) while being an adolescent
(B) while in adolescence
(C) at the time of her being adolescent
(D) as being in adolescence
(E) as an adolescent

I shortlisted Choice B & E. Correct Answer is E

I signed the agreement as a Management Representative of the company I was aware of what i was doing.
I slapped him while got drunk Probably i was not aware of what i was doing

I think the question is not expecting the meaning expressed by choice E.
Pls help correct my concept.

Choice (B) while in adolescence - is wrong due to ambiguity in tense. The construct "while in adolescence" is can mean "while she was in her adolescence" or "while she is in her adolescence" and does the tense error.

If the choice had wordings as "while she was in her adolescence", it would have been grammatically correct.

Choice (E) as an adolescent - is concise and appropriate in this context.

Hi Parapon,
i have a doubt here...

Actually as should be followed by clause right?
But doesn't this sentence violate that rule?

IMO you cant eliminate choice on the basis that ALTHOUGH and WHILE cant come together.

ALTHOUGH she spoke to me on phone while driving the car manytimes, she never met an accident.
(THIS MIGHT NOT BE A GMAT LIKE SENTENCE but whole intention is to say that we cant eliminate on this basis.)

ALTHOUGH is used to connect two clauses only wth A COMMA.
NEVER use ANOTHER CONJUNCTION
.
MEANS .: ALTHOUGH X, Y ==(X,Y = CLAUSES) ==>CORRECT
ALTHOUGH X,conjunction Y.==(X,Y = CLAUSES)==>.==>CONJUNCTION = FOR/AND/NOR/BUT/OR/YET/SO==>INCORRECT

HOPE IT HELPS

Re: Although she had signed a pledge of abstinence while being an [#permalink]
My two cents of the knowledge on the above:

'AS' as a preposition can functions as:

(1). Function (In the role of)

Although not personally good,John as a lawyer was a good person.

(2). Equation (is equal to)

I think of you as my friend.

(3). Stage as

As a child, I was notorious.

Second aspect is the connector issue and as per MGMAT SC Guide and other sources:

We cannot have two connectors(Subordinating Conjunctions such as Although/When/While as well as Coordinating conjunctions such as But/And?So) in a SENTENCE without any punctuation.

Hope that make sense !

Here are my 2 cents to this question.

"Being" is generally used to indicate the current state of something. Here we aren't really talking about the CURRENT state of anything. Hence Options A, C and D can be eliminated.

The usage of while happens when one wants to represent two actions that occur simultaneously.

Ex : I listen to the radio while driving to office.

This makes the usage of "while" inappropriate in this case.

This brings us down to Option E.

Hope that helps.

Option E is preferred over option B because usage of "As" here is correct. As here is used as "in capacity of" or "as a function". Moreover usage of "while" either represents a contrast or used to state two simultaneous actions. Here if it is used as a contrast it would be redundant with "although" because although already presents contrast and there is no two simultaneous actions. Therefore usage of while is incorrect. :)

Only (E) makes sense. B conveys the wrong meaning.

Rest are nowhere near.

Although is used to connect to clauses only with a comma.
Option B uses although with while.

Please provide kudos if this help. Need 9 to move to next level :)

+1 for E.

While being an adolescent / while being in adolescence is unidiomatic.

Can you explain why options A,B,C & D are incorrect

when usage of being is allowed or for what purpose being is used and what role of being does play in question.

Hi Saby,

If you look all the options with being, all are redundant. Why?

meaning for adolescence-"the period following the onset of puberty during which a young person develops from a child into an adult."
Thus it already defines some time period.

Now "being" is used where you want to show that the action is still happening.(here in the past)
Hence Being Adolescence becomes redundant.

I hope it helps :)

Use of being to show a state/role is incorrect. Being is used in case of a temporary state.

She was an adolescent at that time; she was not being an adolescent.
We can say 'she was being irrational' to show a temporary state.
